question regarding KMG motor

I am pretty sure mine is an 18XX?? 1.5 hp motor. Not exactly sure of the RPM's

I'm running a 1725RPM 1.5HP 3ph motor with a VFD, so I can run to 3650RPM@120Hz.

As mentioned, I'm pretty sure he recommends a 1725-1800RPM motor for the 4" drive wheel. I believe you can get a smaller drive wheel from him if you want to run a faster motor, or you can just halve the size of the pulley on your motor if you wanted to run something like a 3450. If you have VS (through a VFD, pulleys, etc) you could run basically whatever speed you wanted.

I'm running 1725 and 2HP. The ratios give me 1000 to 5000 SFM. It is about right for me.

Buy the largest motor that you can afford. I bought the 1.5 hp variable speed because at the time, I didn't have 220v. I wish I had the 2 or better, the 3 hp motor. With that said, I can't say enough good things about the machine. Make sure you get an extra platen so that you can have different radii on the edges for different size knives. Burt Foster has a platen that is rounded over enough that he does integral plunge cuts on it. I would also advise you to buy the baseplate so that you can install the tooling arm rack if you choose. it also let sou move the grinder around much more easily than one where the separate components are bolted to the bench.

To those who have a KMG grinder, how many horsepower is the motor and how many RPM is it capable of?

Hi, The KMG is not sold with a motor, so you have many choices. The fact that the motor is not integrated into the machine provides even more choices.

I'm not really sure what you are asking...perhaps how much horsepower and speed can the KMG handle?

I'm not really sure, however, there are several machines in industrial facilities running 5hp...and an Arkansas knifemaker named John Fitch that is using something like 7hp on one of his KMGs.

For max speed, I wouldn't hesitate to spin the driveshaft on the KMG upto about 5000 rpm.

Keep in mind that you can use just about any speed motor...for just about any speed on the grinder by using a belt drive with pulleys between the motor and grinder. Different pulley ratios will provide different speeds...and unlimited choices.

If you need more speed, please contact us and we can look into the specifics of your application.

The most popular motor that we sell for the KMG is 1-1/2hp.

I hope this helps,

Rob
