Hi guys, quick question regarding the titanium on the ZT 0300, what i want to know is if the titanium locking scale is painted, or basically how is it colored black?, the reason i want to know this is because i don't like it black. I wanted to pick one up and flame it to a nice blue/purple type look, so i need to know how its colored to figure out the best way to go about removing the color. If it is just flamed black already that would be ideal i would think, anyways please chime in cause i want to pick one up this week, if not i'm going to go with the 0550 cause it looks like it would be easier to do... thanks!

i want the coloring of the 0300 to look like the knife in this vid....

if it is DLC then no. at least I dont think so, never tried it before but DLC is tough stuff

I will keep you guys posted on this....I am in the same boat. I am not a big fan of the DLC coating on the blade or the frame (or at least I was a fan until it started to get scratched up). So I sent it off to get bead blasted. We shall see how it goes - Ive got my fingers crossed. There is a member here (dslteck) that offers free bead blasting and stonewashing to forum members, so I am taking him up on his offer. The package is en route to him now.

Here is a DLC coated blade he did for me.

Sorry I don't quite remember.

It is DLC as far as I know.
Yes it can be removed.
It may be a little difficult with the grooves in the ti - but it would be a fun project.
You can remove it and flame it.
Even if you get the majority gone, and have little flecks of black, the little flecks would look sweet with the Blue/Purple flame job.

Benchmade never offered DLC for the Skirmish. The only coating option they had was BK1, which isn't the same thing.

Good to see that the logo's still sharp after that treatment though.

I put forth a pretty serious effort to get the coating off of mine. Had I known how much of a pain in the ass it would be to get the grooves completely... I would have never started. This is after a few hours with a dremel, 000g steel wool, and an hour with a tube of flitz. I actually did this with the intention of flaming my titanium lock side as well but noticed there is STILL a small amount of paint in the grooves.

Well, now, THAT is cool! How is Ti for maintaining a shine, does it tarnish or stay really polished?

How, please explain and spare no detail.

What exactly are you asking here Rev? I just did this minus the flaming so perhaps I could answer your question?

BTW congrats on become a mod.
Thanks. I was interested in any additional explanations on how to remove the coating. I wanted to clean my 0303 off. Try some electrochem anodizing maybe.

 What do you mean?
You can use tools, some tough scrubby stuff and oil, and I'm sure there are a few other techniques.
It's hard to do and is a total pain but it can be removed.
Though you may either still have a little bit of a shadow or flecks, areas of black/grey.
DLC can take a lot of abuse and such but it does pick up wear marks.
Basically I guess you just forcefully wear the coating down.

But mainly I guess certain tools and really just rubbing something you can run over the coating that will that will wear it down. Like tough scrubby things you can find in kitchens.

I bought a dremel 4000 and just used the all three of these finishing wheels start to finish removing the black coat (http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accesso...x?catid=2042&catname=Finishing+Abrasive+Buffs). I also gave this a shot but didnt like the way it was affecting the material. I read someone used 000g steel wool and gave that a shot for about 30 minutes but didnt really notice too much of a difference. I tried everything on the back side of the scale to see how it would affect the knife. I finished the knife with these three and a tube of flitz paste.

If you have any experience with a dremil or polishing you will probably have better results than I did. It was my first try at polishing and my first dremel.
