Awesome knife!! I just got my Starmate today--YES! I always look over knives to see if i can find any little imperfections. This knife is near perfect. Nothing is perfect. Well, my question is kinda hard to put in writing, so try to bear with me.

Ok, imagine that you have the blade locked open and are looking at it with the sharp side facing you. Right where the blade is attached to the handle, where the pivot pin goes through, i see that there is a slight gap or space between the blade and each scale. Ok, turn the knife over to the back side and the scales are right up snug against the blade.

Why are there gaps in front but not in the back of the knife? It locks up very secure and has no play at all. Im just wondering if this is maybe a adjustment they do in the factory? Or is my knife being stressed in any way? Sorry if this makes no sence at all.

Hi Dan!
Just checked my starmate. Between the blade and the and the scales there should be a washer on each side. So if there is a small gap that's just fine. In the case of mine it is so.
Does your starmate open smooth? If so I wouldn't worry. Hope this helps.
Greetings

Yeah, i noticed that it does have washers, but my main question is: How come the scales are right up against the blade on the back(right where the thumb ribs are) And in the front there are gaps? Shouldnt there be spaces in the back too?

Another way of putting it would be as follows: The blade opens very smoothly and then gets a little tighter as it is fully extended because the scales touch the blade toward the back and dont touch the blade in the front(opposit side of the thumb rest).

just forget it--im sure it's no big deal. After all, the knife works just fine! Im just a little too picky.

Just checked mine again (love to check my knife) and yes you are right there is a space between the blade and the scales on the backside too. On my starmate the blade does not touch either scale directly. If i hold it against the light I can see through it.
I am happy that yours runs smooth too.

D-T-M,
My Starmate has the same gaps as yours. It appears to be purely cosmetic, but just to make sure...
Do you have any lateral play in the blade?
Up or down play?
If the answer is no, it's cool...all systems go!
Does it pass the Spinal Tap test? Yes? Great!
Mine has none of these problems and if yours doesn't, outstanding!
The Starmate is one of those knives I would be willing to bet my life on if I had to, I feel confident enough with it to make that statement. As a matter of fact, many of Spyderco's product are on that list. I can't say the same about some other manufacturer's product.
I hope your Starmate serves you well!

Misque:

Thanks for checking. I feel better now! There is no play at all. Very, very smooth. It has a very secure lock-up as well. Even when i hold the liner lock back, so it has no effect on the blade, it doesnt move. I guess that means everythings good to go!

Sounds like your ready to rock'n'roll!
Enjoy!
