Question to 940 owners

I just recently got my 940 and I have a question. With my 940, the lock-up isn't solid (there is side to side play) if the pivot screw is loose enough to allow smooth/quick deployment, if I tighten it so that there is no blade play then the blade barely moves. Is this normal? I feel like the washers could loosen up after a while so that the blade can move and the lock up is tight, but I'm not sure. Is this something I need to get fixed or will the washers loosen up sufficiently? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

My 5+ yrs old 940 always has some side-2-side play since day 1. I tinkered around the pivot screw a bit without success, gave up. The blade saber grind thick behind the edge bother me more. Well recently, I reprofiled it 60% toward ffg (+convex edge & shoulder) - it cuts much better now:triumphant:

Like any knife, it'll break in. Before I got a ZT 0560, it was by far my smoothest knife without play.

I want one of those so bad but I don't have the dough. I'm about to trade for a 0550 though so that will have to do for now.

Is it a bk blade?

The one downfall of bm is that the pivot screws aren't very fine. So very small adjustments to the screw are needed.

Once properly set, the 940 is very smooth.

Not a bk blade. The other thing that's worrying me is that the pivot screw doesn't stay where I tighten it. I tighten it to a happy medium and then it loosens back up in like 5 openings.

If this keeps up I am going to be pissed off. I would expect this from a $40 Kershaw, but when I buy a $150 Benchmade it should be flawless

It took me a while to find the sweet spot where i can flick it open and did not have bladeplay. You just need to be patient and make very small adjustments to the pivot screw.

Easy there my friend here's how you fix it and yes as it breaks in, it will get smoother. The pivot design in these is a little bit annoying but they all have a sweet spot. You need to find the spot where the screw is just tight enough that it allows smooth deployment but no side to side play. You need to dial in the pivot screw with your torx bit very gingerly, like 1/64 of a turn at a time as your getting close. Basically turn it so little that you can't even tell your turning it. I'd practice getting it to where you want it a couple times and then do it with a tiny drop of locktite on the pivot screws thread. Let it sit overnight to set. Then add a drop of oil into the pivot and it should be good to go.

Mine have both smoothened up immensely with use. Oh and use a light grade of thread lock so you can break the seal if you ever need to. I HAD to use locktite on both because the pivot naturally wants to loosen off with open/close cycles which always results in side to side play.

I have been doing this and I can get it to where it's acceptable, but the problem is the pivot screw doesn't stay where I tighten it too, it loosens up within 10 turns.

Mine does the same thing. All my BMs do that actually. You need to put plumber's tape or purple or blue loctite on the pivot screw.

I can tighten mines all the way up and have it in the open position and it still has. It hasn't had much use either. I contacted benchmade and they just told me to send it in

No. 150 does not buy you even close to flawless, get to around 400 and you'll start to get close.

There is a point to were the pivot screw is tight enough to 99.5% eliminate side to side play but still deploys very fast and balanced. I have yet to see a knife that can open it's fastest with the pivot as tight as possible.

Mine did the same thing. There is a sweet spot that will eliminate blade play and still allow for effortless deployment. It just takes a little work to find it. After that put a drop of blue loctite on it and forget about it.
