I was wondering if the Windlass Steelcrafts standard issue Kurki was of any quality ? I recently purchased one on the basis of several factors 1. It is ( so ive been told ) that it is standard Issue to the army of India 2. The price was fairly good $40 3. It look like a decent knife too use outdoors or for around the house chores ( ie. hacking brush and unwanted saplngs ).

I plan on buying a HI kobra when I have sufficent fund but until I can do so could anyone share any info on this knife?

Hmmm...

I came here with a similar question about yet ANOTHER khukuri manufacturer that was not H.I. And, well, here we are.

I haven't personally used one of these, so I can't say. But if this size/style knife appears to you, you can't do any better than an 18" Chiruwa Ang Khola or WW2 by H.I. You won't want another Windlass, my friend, I can guarantee you that!

There is a whole lot to be said for practical, useful pieces of art, and so it goes with H.I.

I got one of those 20yrs ago and still have it..the workmanship can be good to horrible depending on the knife..it has been a good working khuk for lite camp clearing and to ride in the truck for those unexpected chores..it dosent come close to a hi in quality..but all in all mine has been worth the price

When i got it it had a nice scabbard but the edge was horrid! It took me a week with a diamond-file to put a decent edge on it. The inner curve is worse. I'd need a rounded file and anoth week to get it to cut. On the bright side now it cuts very well and hast rusted ......yet.

Sorry. Didn't wanna get negative. Get an AK.

There were pics of an etch on one of those once. Revealing.

I had one. It was the first kukri I ever owned. :barf:

It's okay if you just want a khukuri shaped object. The one I owned came with no edge to speak of. The karda and chakma were a joke. The wooden slabs were not flush with the tang of the knife, making for a very uncomfortable handle.

This is not a blade that I would recommend. If you want to do some work with a khukuri, save a few dollars and get a blem or a villager from Yangdu. You'll have a good looking quality knife that will last you a lifetime.

You already have it, right?

Read the safety thread.

Enjoy using the knife you have. When you find yourself wanting something else, ask about different models which have their own devotees and generalized uses.

Welcome.

Is there a chance that H.I. would custom forge a kukri out of wootz steel on a special order?

If so it may be better for me to wait untill I could afford something like that

Primarily about another makers product...just swept it over here.

Welcome...I am sure you'll find a better than decent khukuri here...but they use the materials they have available.

I doubt you're going to get much higher performance than HI's thick differentially tempered 5160. The only thing that I would expect more from would be Busse's INFI.

Wootz steel??? Where would you find it??? Sure, it'll be like 2 grand.

Murgun, for about $70 or $80 you can get a 15" BAS or similarly sized knife with great steel and a comfortable handle that will last you a lifetime.

Keep the WS as a wall hanger or user if you like, and see how it performs for you. Getting an HI and comparing them will show you the difference. And as Andy said, etching them both to show the temper line would be very revealing.

Yes, it's twice what you paid, but shipping is paid by HI, so that cuts the differential down right there, and you are getting 6 or 7 times the knife IMHO.

Welcome to the forum, and keep an eye out for the daily deals. Measure the one you have so you can spot one that is a similar size. I'm guessing your WS is also about 15" OAL. When you see one you like jump quick and email Yangdu at HIMIMP@AOL.COM.

She has a no B.S. Warranty, so if there is a problem at all with it she will take care of you.

Please let us know if you get an HI and what model you decide on.

Regards,

Norm

Oh, and Murgun? There are some wonderful threads about how to choose this or that model ... depending on the use you'll put to it, your size, etc. They'd be worth a read, while you wait for Yangdu to post her specials ...

It's a khukrappie.

Sorry, no one was saying it so I just had to.

I don't think our kamis have experience working wootz. Like Andy said, it would be quite expensive and even if you got one I would not want it for a daily user. Hang on the wall.

Please understand that this Forum is about Himilayan Imports Khuks. There are few, if any, other manufacturers that can match HI quality, price and unconditional lifetime warranty.

You will be amazed by the difference!

We are a bit prejudiced! But justifiably so.

When / if you get one, I predict you will not be able to stop with just one.

My first and still favorite is the BAS or British Army Special, but I have a lot of HI Khuks up to 30" long

I bought two once. It'll serve good use as a comparator. IE when you compare your HI's to it you'll be able to see very easily why they dominate the market.

Well at least its nice to get some feedback.
I will try etching the blade and see if it has the right temper line.
The wootz would be a hanger but i didnt take into mind the difficulty in working it as apposed to normal steel.
Maybe one day when i can make a good blade il make one as a side project ( I hoping to go to the ABS school in texarkana in the next few years ).

Oh and thanks for putting up with me...... il adimt im a n00b here and im still learning what and what not to do in this forum.

No problem dude.

Do you have some source for wootz? Never known it to be available.

Andy
