Hello all, I have sent a knife (back when I was a gold member) to the UK as part of a sale. I sent it with Canada post and listed it as a gift, the buyer says that he has a customs fee to pay on it because they thought I was a dealer (not sure why). He wants me to pay the fee, I don’t find this fair because whenever I bought a knife off the forum and there was a fee I paid it, as i thought all buyers should. Please let me know what you think. Also it is the buyers reasonability to pay all fee’s in my opinion not the seller.

hey

for me taxes are always on the receivers head.. i get lots of knives from the states, if i get hit i just bend over and pay the taxes

my 2c + 30% taxes :D

1. buy a gold membership again and support BFC
2. Pay the fee...and suck it up...it cannot be that much money..

keep smiling...now your older and wiser..

agree upon buying the membership, just gotta wait till i have more money. Damn University loans..

And the fee is alot of money (not BF fee, the customs fee)..

Also the buyer spoke to customs agents on his side and it seems as if all will be fine.

The fee is for the buyer to pay, not the seller. It's not your responsibility to pay his taxes for him. The standard VAT is 17.5%, and I wouldn't even consider paying it for him.

What kind of nerve this fellow has, asking you to pay HIS fee. Please PM me his name so I can Black List them. All fees incurred are on him.....I am speechless about this!

Having been hit with fees once or twice myself, I've always figured it was my responsibility (as buyer that is) and not even thought of contacting the seller. On the other hand I've seen some sellers offer to pay fees for people if they're hit for them (if a copy of a receipt can be shown), and have been impressed with that level of commitment to a good deal.

If you deal a lot it might be worth mentioning, either on the ad or during any discussion, that fees incured are the buyer's responsibility.

Basically you're in the right, but it might be worth some compromise to keep up good will? perhaps offer to pay half...if he can show you the receipt (probably what I'd do; but you'd still be perfectly reasonable not to).

inncubus, That is few and far between....some people go that extra mile and if it is offered, then fantastic, but to ask the seller to foot the bill is rude. If you have any links to these sales...please let me know.

In that ir was listed on the customs dec as a gift, the buyer was already trying to beat the taxes. The buyre knows what the taxes are there. It's his responsibility. And he probably doesn't want customs to see the receipt, because then they will know exactly how much to tax him.

My 2 cents worth.

Absolutely agree with you, it is indeed going above and beyond to offer to pay for something that isn't at all your responsibility. The guy asking for Clone7 to do it is clearly being a bit of a jerk (or to be as charitable as possible a little on the naive/stupid side).
I do sometimes think though that, if one is dealing regularly particularly, it might (it might not-circumstances are always relevant too) be worth a small ('cos it's not been mentioned how much, and I've never found customs charges too ridiculous so I'm guessing based on that) loss to be that guy who goes the extra mile. Then making sure it's 100% clear what the situation is in future so nobady gets the chance to complain;) .

Yeah it's a pain but, as I said, it's probably what I'd do (offer a portion of it)-just to make sure no one can possibly call me.

Clone7 totally shouldn't feel obligated to though, it IS the buyers responsibility (and, as mentioned by Mr Martin, the fact that it was mentioned as being sent as a "gift" suggests the guy knew that and is just being a dick now). I was just offering an alternative if he felt to be warrented.

I haven't got any links at the moment, it's been a few (2-3) sellers on Ebay who deal in large quanities (thousands of individual items) to the UK from the US; they also generally claim to never have had anything stopped (which, considering I've had one item meet an extra charge of the ones I've ordered from the US, I can just about believe).
