How much does a knife have to cost for you to think it's Too Expensive??

I'm talking about knives you will use and not buy for investment or re-sale.

And does the same apply to your other gear??

As in do you have a $300 knife and think Its reasonable to spend $200 on a sleeping bag,or tent, etc.

Or do you spend a lot more $ on knives??

I'll go first--Most of my knives are between $200-300.(some a lot less--a few worth more).

My wilderness gear is not quite as expensive outside of the Maxpedition Bags I have.

So to me--when a knife gets above $300--
-I usually start talking myself out of it.

What is your $$ amount that makes you pause or reject it outright.

Again--this is for a knife you will USE.

my most expensive would be my Bagwell and Lamey bowies both costing around $1500. I bought them both to use so i knew that going into it. I didn't just want a bowie but a Bagwell bowie etc...

My normal priced user has always been the discontinued busse mr.mofo purchased on the exchange years ago at $500. that is a big markup from when they originally sold but that is the nature of busses.

I guess to me i take into consideration what the knife was made from. For instance if i paid alot to get a custom with ivory or pearl handles i wouldn't use such a knife for fear of damaging a more fragile material like that.

Good question Dr. Bill

To me,it's not so much a money issue. It's more of a that knife is to pretty to use thing.

I can get the features I want for a knife under $200. But I would say that $250 to $300 is pushing it.

I top out around the $225 to $250 range...usually. I have been known to spend more if I get a bug up my a$$. I'll pay more for a sturdy knife with good build quality and practical design than I will for froo froo cosmetic features.

My current self imposed limit is $200. Not that I can afford that right now. :p

Cost doesn't matter if I want it bad enough, I will save or whatever it takes to get it.

My Most expensive knife to date.

As sad as it is, I have sort of a mental block against really "using" knife that cost more than a couple hundred dollars, with the exception of an older beater Seb. When going in the yard, on the roof, or out in the woods, my knives are usually in the $100 range (Vantage pro, Endura, RC-6, etc.) The higher end knives are mainly light carry and collection pieces. Sorry CR. Maybe I'll change in time.

I would say 500 would be pushing it for me...not that i have a knife thats worth 500, but i dont really have problems buying them if have the money, and using them can be hard sometimes but i usually get over it...

Close to $500.00 is the most expensive knife I own.

I usually spend more on knives than any other gear.

Right now I can't afford any knife, but I know when i get out of school and get a job I will spend good money of some knives i have been eyeing. I would say my users would top out at around $400. My light use edc/collection pieces would top out around $800. These would all be custom folders at that price. I don't think i could spend more than $400 on a fixed or a knife I am going to use hard.

Gear wise, I will be spending good money on all my camping gear. It is as important to me as a good knife. I don't like things failing on me, especially when I'm in the middle of the sticks miles away from anything. Spending good money on outdoors gear could mean the difference between life or death in some situations, you might never know.

Well my limit has changed drastically since finding the forums lol, and I am sure I am not alone in that. I would say I try to keep it under $200, but of course it all depends on the deal ;). If I can get like a $700 knife for $300 I may go above my limit, and perhaps buy it just to resell it and get more out than I put in. I think the most I have paid is $200 on my shivworks clinchpick

I will spend according to how much money i make. If i had more money then i would happily spend more on knives. However i am quite destitute at the moment, so i try to stay around 200 per purchase. I have spent quite a bit more on guns, but i think i am good there for now. As for camping/outdoor gear, i try to go cheep as possible. I am always willing to spend a little more money on items of quality though.

Cars is another story. I have spent thousands over the past few years building my camaro and she is still not done.

All my knives and multitools are below 100 euros. The most expensive of them is a Leatherman Wave, costed 86 euros and is the most expensive knife or tool I ever had. I select knives and tools mainly on usability and if they fit my needs.

When looking at my to other (outdoor) gear, I have more expensive items, like an outdoor jacket, wind and waterproof. In my outdoor philosophy, clothing and a good tent and sleeping bag are more important than the knives and tools. I typically carry multiple knives, probably not the best and most modern ones, but good knives that do what they need to do. But I only have one sleeping bag with me and one tent.

This doesn't mean I don't like many of the very expensive knives.

I don't think I have a limit. If I like the knife and want to use it, I will.

For a user I the max would be at the $250 mark. For a collector I might stretch past that, but don't see that happening too frequently. I'm a poor college student, so I generally try not to go past the $150 mark.
