$$$$ question ????????????

Limit seems to change every year. In 2004 it was $130 for the Benchmade 42 (I can't believe the price has gone up so high in 6 years). In 2009 it was $455 for a Sebenza w/ inlays.

Inflation's a killer. :D

The limit varies based on each knife. Too expensive is relative to the value of the knife. There are knives where 3 dollars is too much, and some where 300 is not enough.

If you were looking for an upper limit, the most I've spent on a knife is 125.

Hi WILLIAM.M -

The most I have spent on one knife was right at $400.

It certainly gives me pause if the price is over $200 for any blade.

I did spend the money on the AGR Acies and have not regretted the choice to do so.

I also intend to buy a CRK small Sebenza someday, but not right away.

I will only spend that much if the knife is truly special - and I use them, although I am not particularly hard on knives.

best regards -

$200 is my limit. Much more than that and the knife better be able to sprout little cartoon limbs+googly eyes+a tophat and tapdance across the table for my amusement. That said, I keep looking at the $400 Benchmade Griptilian CPM-M4 with carbon fiber handle and longing for what might be but what never will. $400 is crazy for an ordinary-use pocketknife IMO.

Lately I've only been only EDC'ing knives in the $100-$200 range...I've had Striders and Sebe's...and I'd carry and use them. I'm in construction and have a bad habit of setting hand tools down and forgetting about them for an hour or two. I had a fear of doing that with my Striders and Sebe's and decided it wasn't worth the risk of loosing them. I now carry good quality, less expensive knives, like my P-Military and Caly3...Sure I miss my Striders and Sebe's, but these knives perform as well and I won't loose a whole lotta sleep if one of these comes up missing.

I have a hard time carrying my Small Sebbie, but it still looks like new.

I think any used knife is a lot easier for me to carry than a new knife at the same price point so I recommend shopping for a used knife for a user knife.

Used knives don't depreciate much with use and that makes them easier to carry.

Knifeworks. Plus many of the online stores that carry Benchmade will give a much better price if you call. They will give a better price without haggling although that might get it down even more? Everyone knows Benchmade's pricing policy is a little ridiculous including the sellers.

Whatever sebenzas are going for is usually my limit for production folders,
so from my dealer thats about $330-$410, but I could see spending $500-$700
on some full customs. I would say that I definitely spend more on my knives(relatively)
than my other gear except for maybe my firearms. For me I justify it buy time spent with product in question. For me camping gear, fishing equipment, golf clubs, ect. they all have a time and a season. Sometimes I may only use certain gear a dozen times in a year. My knives on the other hand are with me every single day all day long. I use them countless times throughout the day, so why not pay more for something you use more than any other piece of gear you own?
It comes down to how much is to much for a constant companion.

I like the way you think

My friends always give me those looks when they ask, "how much is this one?" Price is up to the individual and to me it's worth having a knife with higher end materials that's going to be used everyday :)

Folks with a good quantity of disposable income will spend a helluva a lot more for a hand made or good quality user production knife than folks who are less fortunate and do not have that luxury.

For instance, some years back when my business brought in well over six figures annually I spent bags of money on Randal Made's, Treeman's, Doziers, ect.. ect.. Now that my business is not producing decent income because of current economic factors,, I am using my Buck's and Eddie White's these days.

I think this pretty much somes it up.

Wow that is one beautiful. I know Busse knives are expensive. Wished I could own on but not in my buget range. And once more what a knife. I love the Micarta color if that is what it is and the handle shape could not be better. A sebenza is pushing it for me. But I am getting a semi custom knife made now. His patterns but you choose what you want for scales or if you want his vine file work or his mosaic pins he makes and you can also have fiber spacers if you want and a thong if you want. The Basic knife is plain rivets, any scale material you wand and a scotch brite standard finish. Oh and you can get satin finished or mirror finish as an extra also. I bought the whole deal less the extra finish. I plan on using this knife. Comes with a beautiful sheath. And I am a lefty and he makes left hand sheaths. I asked him to put a belt drop loop on it instead of the slilt in the back. He said no problem and he would normally charge for that but he threw it in for me. He makes some beautiful folders and he will make them right or left hand, liner or frame lock what ever you want.

I guess I got off topic a little but I am excited about my knife. End cost I am not sure of but it will be in the two hundred range. And I forgot you can pick between CPM154 or S30V I chose S30V.

So to finaly answer this persons question I would say two to 375 range because I plan on that sebenza in the not to distant future.

cheers

if you want that persons name I think he considers others designs but I am not so sure he will make as many as you want. He has a job and he makes knives partime. His turnaround for one knife is 4 to 6 months. And also if you want to check his work out send me a pm for that also. Not sure I am supposed to advertise here or not.

Cost doesn't matter if I want it bad enough, I will save or whatever it takes to get it.

My Most expensive knife to date.

$450 for me. I once owned a Regular Sebenza and two 21's and they were too expensive for me to use. They sat in a drawer and I considered them collectibles. I sold them all a while ago and got my most expensive knife (Micarta Classic Sebenza, dual thumb stud) which for some reason I liked way more and it has been a user since I got it and I don't plan on ever selling it. One reason I'm able to consider it a completely usable knife is I picked up an extra blade/bushing/washers set a while back in a trade so I have parts to protect against almost anything but loss.

I got a Strider Sng DGG 2 months ago $500, way to much cash. I am about to sell it, perhaps on this forum...Yepp it´s cool but $500 cool...nope.

How much does a knife have to cost for you to think it's Too Expensive?? Over $200.00. $100.00 -$200.00 I'll look at but still hard to justify spending at present.
I'm talking about knives you will use and not buy for investment or re-sale.

And does the same apply to your other gear?? Depends.

As in do you have a $300 knife and think Its reasonable to spend $200 on a sleeping bag,or tent, etc. I would have spent close to $200 for the sleeping bag I wanted, insted I found it at a garage sale, brand new, Army issue modular sleeping bag for less than 20 bucks.
Or do you spend a lot more $ on knives?? More on knives, because I keep buying them, I'm pretty much set on my gear. A few new things here and there.
I'll go first--Most of my knives are between $200-300.(some a lot less--a few worth more).

My wilderness gear is not quite as expensive outside of the Maxpedition Bags I have.

So to me--when a knife gets above $300--
-I usually start talking myself out of it.

What is your $$ amount that makes you pause or reject it outright.

Again--this is for a knife you will USE.

answers above in blue.
