I don't own a 102 and have only looked at them online. To me some of them (newer ones) look as though the blade is slightly angled up while the older ones look more straight. I don't know if what I'm saying this makes sense. So my question, is the blade angled up a little bit? If so, has this always been the case? If so , why? This is just more of a curiousity question.

I think this topic came up within the past year or so and agreed with your observation. I can't remember the thread but I'll do some searching to see if I can find it. Just now, I pulled out my 102s and I'll look at them to see if I notice when the change occurred.

Edit: This is probably the thread I was thinking of:

It's just a clip-point blade like the 119 and the 120.
It's in the mode of the old Bowie knife point.......designed to be sharpened and rip upward in a fight.
It's more style than function, these days.......for most of us.

I'm talking about the angle of thee blade in relation to the handle. Seems to look to me like the whole blade (not just the edge) is angled up slightly from guard not straight like a 119 , 120 or any of the other fixed blades.

Thank you. That thread answered exactly what I was talking about.

For those of us in the cheap seats (baseball reference), is it true the rumor that it's done that way to give your hand some room while cutting on flat surface?

Yes, I'll read the linked thread at some point...

If you get one make sure your sheath has a liner. I bought my wife a custom nicely tooled sheath for hers and the first time she put that clip point into the sheath, wala, a hole.

I've done that before with some other knives. :) Not fun but happens sometimes.I've gotten over the years to really watch when I put knives back iin the sheaths now.

From the thread it kind of seemed that way. Someone (I'm not going back and rereading right now to find out who. :) ) mentioned it was for better handling. So that's kind of how I took it.

Here is a picture of my only 102 with friends. As you can see by the Idaho stamp it isn't a new one. It does look like the blade does have an upswept look to it.

Your picture there illustrates exactly what I mean. Some of the pictures of old old ones don't look like that to me.

I see what you mean.
I wouldn't over analyze it.
It's probably just a crooked knife.
Luckily, there is the Forever Warranty.

:D

They are like that to enable the petite knife to cut more effectively. The 'bend' puts the blade in contact before the knuckles. Many knives are made like that. 102's have been like that since I can remember. That handle to blade angle is one of the things I love about the 102.

Darn........and here I put mine in a vice and rapped it a few times with a sledge hammer just to get it lookin' right. So it was supposed to be crooked? Well, ain't that a kick in the head!

Thanks DocT, that's kind of the conclusion I drew from the other thread but wasn't 100% sure. I've never played with one before, might have to try one out.
