I have been cutting out my knives from D-2 bar stock on a wood band saw converted into a metal saw (pulleys used to slow it down and metal cutting blade) and grinding them on a home made grinder that uses a 10-12 inch stone. When I first started out D2 was just plain painful to cut and grind, even with a new blade and the stone cleaned off with a diamond tip ..err...thing my dad made. I have been using the same TPI blade on the saw, the only differences are: One of the pulleys shattered a while back and was replaced with one slightly smaller and a new belt which is tighter and I have been letting a friend cut 1/4in thick 440C out on it for a while, and he really hogs it no-matter what I say ...he gets to excited now that I'm showing him the basics of making knives. He also has been pushing pretty hard into the stone when grinding, which has exposed the coarse grit in it more. I just started on a new D-2 knife tonight and instead of taking about 30-50 mins to cut it out it only took about 5 all together. I also noticed that as I started the basics for the convex grind ... the stone seemed to be eating away much more than normal. And yes, I am sure that I am using D-2, that's all I use and recently made another drop point from the same bar and it was a nightmare to cut. Could the blade finally have been broken in or might it be the tighter belt, or something else? Has anyone ever experienced this or have some ideas as to what happened? I'd like to know so I can repeat it, this has honestly made knife-making much more enjoyable.
