Hi I'm a 17 years old that wants to get into knife making. My family owns a metal shop that uses CNC machines to machine parts for any company etc. I have no experience with solidworks but I do have 2 years of experience with Mastercam and designed a folding knife with it so I hope you can give me some feed backs on the design.

I don't think you should start of with a folder. Your folks might be able to help you get everything to fit perfect but grinding a blade isn't as easy as it looks. Especially a complex grind like the one you pictured. Make a couple basic fixed blades first before you jump in. It will help you learn the basics of grinding a bevel and the patience it takes to make a decent knife

Put simply, slow down.Your going to get this a lot around here because theres a lot of masters of the craft (not me) here that know what there talking about. Listen to them if you truly want to learn.

Also, fill out your profile info. Who knows, you might live right next to a maker thats willing to help you;)

Starting with a folder is ambitious. You sound like you are ideally placed and have access to a lot of tools, but a folder has a lot of aspects that have to work for the whole to function, any one of which, if it isn't right, will spoil the finished product even if you do everything else right. I have read a lot of people say that people who make fixed blades find that starting making folders is a bit of a jump. Looks like you were inspired by Allen Elishewitz?

This may be why you haven't had more replies. I am not a folder maker, but there look to be a bunch of things that need to be changed on the design you posted, and I am sure that experienced folder makers will see even more. When faced with offering advice where there are so many things to talk about folk are likely to put aside replying till they have a block of time, or they may just not ever get around to it.

You could use your CNCs to profile out your pattern in some sort of sheet plastic, something you can assemble easily with dowel pins, file bevels on and handle, without the expense of final materials. You will learn a lot from that prototyping activity.

Have you considered making parts for an existing folder? There are a lot of people who make new handle scales for factory knives, and some that regrind blades. You could do some very cool things with your CNC for handles. You would have to buy the base knife, which isn't all bad since you will get a chance to learn and see how it is put together. Benchmade Griptilians are popular for this. There are threads about it in the Maintenance and Tinkering area, and the Benchmade area.

I was actually thinking about making a few fixed blades relying solely on cnc for bevels since I do not own a grinder yet ( thinking of making one too). I got interested in folders from Grimsmo knives since I've watched almost all of his knife making videos I've learned a lot of machining and manufacturing techniques but not with the design aspects like the length and angle of the pivot to the stop pin or a flat lock face and radius lock face. overall I think I will settle on making fixed blade as a start and producing some folders prototype :)

Nathan the machinist did an excellent WIP on making a knife with his CNC equipment. Can someone maybe find that and give him a link? Frank

Ho tommywoh
There you are. This should provide lots of info on using the more advanced equipment to make knifes !!!!!!!!!!! And thanks to C_Claycomb. Frank
