questions about etching makers marks

I had a few questions regarding etching makers marks. First can this be done in any metal, or only certain ones? and second where do I get stencils made with my name on them? I am in a small town and may not have a store that will do it locally, so does anybody know of a place I can order them online?

Search for Ernie Grospitch knives on the internet. He makes stencils and is a great guy to boot.

Most any metal that will conduct electricity will etch, electricly that is.
