I am having a bit of a problem finding a respirator/eye protection combo that realy works well .

I use n95 disposable masks and a full face shield while grinding.
Problem: fogging/condensation

Problem: I want to use a better dual cartridge respirator but this kind of mask will not fit under my full face shield.
I know i could use the mask with goggles but I never seem to get a good fit because the nose piece of the mask pushes up the goggles and I get gaps between my face and the goggles just under my eyes and thats a no no .

So any Info. and even better pics. of what you guys wear while grinding (as in eye /lung protection) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I use a 3M respirator with welding type filters so they block fumes too. My sinuses are VERY sensitive to my shop dust :( I wear prescription safety glasses and a ball cap. Since my eyes and most of my face are already covered, I forgo the face sheild. The ball cap brim blocks out a LOT of the flying debris that would usually enter the top area of the glasses. Also I had issues with fogging when trying to wear a full face sheild way back when.

I use a Resp-o-Rator and prescription safety glasses. The Resp-o-Rator has been discussed before on these forums. It's a particulate design based on a snorkel; you put it in your mouth and breath through it with a nose clip. The filters are behind your head. It's by far the lightest, most comfortable thing I've tried -- it's easy to use constantly. It works with beards and most any eye protection.

The down side is that it is particulate only.

I use a 3M Airmate, which has no condensation problems. The mask fits over my glasses, and the air blows so there's no fogging.

I use a 3M/Racal PAPR. It works great and you get non-fogging eye/face protection and filtered air. They are expensive, but I got a good deal on mine on eBay.

cotten balls jamed up the nostrials ;)

Same here :)

Really i only use small disposable respirators.the only time i wear glasses is when i throw on a fresh 50grit belt.after the first few passes the grit is under controle and glasses fog my vision.although,i really should wear a good respirator/shield!

I use an Aircap 2 (Positive pressure unit). If it is fogging up, it's time to change the batteries.

I always make sure and wear a ball cap, repirator, and glasses, and ear plugs. I was smacked by a 36 grit belt going full speed 2 times actually. The ball cap was on then.....and it is always on now :)

How does this type of respirator work for coal smoke? I have a bad feeling that I may get the black lung if I don't wise up and buy one, (or switch to a propane forge)

Switch to a propane forge. It gets way too hot under a respirator while forging.

Don't know about coal smoke. I am just a stock removal guy. My 3M mask/filters do block Kydex fumes though :) Check out 3M's website I am sure they either have the info posted or some contact info to get you protected. I credit Tom Mayo for my getting myself better protected. He posted in a thread a while back that knifemaking won't kill ya but you should start practicing sleeping sitting up.......that's how emphazema sufferers do it. I don't fear death but long term suffering gives me the willies!!!!
