Questions about Laguiole

Thank you to all for the information, with an extra merci to Jolipapa for the links. Now I have more to look at and choose from, looking is a pleasure in itself. My problem is that I want more knives than I need. Anyone have a solution?
:D:thumbsup:

Well there are a number of ways
Get a better job.
Stop wasting money on unnecessary frippery such as food and clothes for your children.
Become an international arms or drug dealer.
Rob the bank....
these are but a
few of many options available to the motivated collector...

En Aubrac up against GEC Powderhorn ....which is no small fry....much slimmer than the chunky ramshorn .

Some time in 1993 I bought a Laguiole on a whim after wandering into a chasse-pêche store in (I think) Montpellier. I can clearly remember the street but which town exactly is a little fuzzy. I remember walking to my right off the main square and down a slight hill. The street curved to the right again and there was a wide sidewalk with bollards behind the curb. The shop was on the left hand side of that street. The store had a narrow street frontage but it was deep and the knife display was on the right side near the back. I remember it seeming kind of expensive at the time, but I can’t remember how much (700 francs?). It had a polished stainless steel blade and some sort of blond wood covers, and must have said Laguiole on the blade, or I never would have known years later that that’s what it was. I only had it a short time before I gave it away. I’m not sure what the point of this story is, but it seemed like the right place to tell it...

You forgot to add, stage a terror attack against other collectors by relieving them of their collections:D Won't win you many plaudits on the Forum, but it's a result ;)

Montpellier is a town noticeable by the huge square (by French standard) -place de la Comédie. There's 3 places downtown to get a knife:

Well, since Rimbaud was dealing arms later in his life, it seems fitting to follow in the footsteps of a French poet to pay for French knives.

It could possibly have been one of the bottom 2 there. I remember the buildings and street being a very light almost whitish color, and it was definitely not a specialty cutlery shop. Those don’t look like Google street view images - have you visited these shops? I only visited Montpellier once, specifically to see the square.

I worked several times in Mtp (including in the theater on the square) and my son lives only 30km away now.

Cool!
The more I look at the street view, the more I think it may be the bottom image, but of course by now my almost 30 year old memories are getting mixed up with images from the internet and I’m not sure what is real anymore. And the best imagery still can not capture the feeling of being there on the ground. The sign on the shop most definitely said “Chasse Peche”, though.
