Evening. I would like to know:
Is "nickel-silver" what other people name as - "German silver"?
Will it be good as a blade's pivot on a folder?
What will the ideal thickness be for a rod that will be strong enough as a pin to hold the blade, but soft enough to hammer it into the handle's chamfer?
Where is the best source for such a rod? Are there any sources at the home range or garden?
Thanks a lot – Michael.

Hey Micheal,

You might get good info to questions like this from the folks in the Shoptalk forum. As far as I know, yes nickel silver and German silver usually refer to the same stuff, which is essentially a brass (copper alloy) typically with lots of zinc. It has similar working property as brass, although of course is white. If brass can work for your application, nickle silver would likely do as well. Your best bet for sourcing it locally is likely to be hobby and supply stores.

Aloha, Phil

I see you're in Israel, so I'm sure we won't have any chain stores in common.

I can buy two rods in a package at my local hardware store packaged as brazing rod.
It has a hard flux coating you have to crumble off.

Although it's called "silver" it's not pure silver white, it has a fairly yellow tint to it

$5 canadian.

Phil is right, brass will do the same thing

If you can find a local welding shop, you can get TIG welding rod, or similar brazing rod as a clean bare wire with no flux
Stainless steel TIG rods will be very bright silver coloured but much harder to peen
