questions about southern grind bad monkey knife

good read, charr! totally agree on S30V btw ESPECIALLY on a $2k Shirogorov
and yeah I'm totally guilty of wanting steel that outweighs (most of) my regular needs... speaking of, I blame you for my weekly Vanax searches :D

You're not alone man! I still need to get my hands on that damn stuff! It's so hard to find outside of the occasional Shirogorov and one or two small-batch customs though. I'm really hoping to see more it it as we go, because it really would be the best steel for a lot of people.
The samples I HAVE managed to get have been super easy to sharpen, very tough, and quite good at holding an edge, so I really want to see more! Oh, and it resists staining like a beast too!

Oh, and you want to talk about super-priced knives in S30V? Ever heard of the Shirogorov Coordinal? It's a custom by one of the brothers, and they have a model in S30V that is valued at about $9,000, and yes, that is the right number of 0s.
They also have a ZDP-189 version and a Vanadis 10, but yeah, $9,000 for S30V? Not for me.

Charr--Though I only own the lowly Bionic, I think Brous does an excellent job with D2. D2 is one of my favorite steels because it has a good combination of wear resistance, toughness, and is almost stainless. Its easy to service too.

I also agree about S30V. My least favorite of the steels I've owned.

Hey man, I've had a Bionic, and I liked it a lot, but it was just a little to small for my meaty hands ;)
I do love some D2 as well. It can be seen sometimes as a cheaper steel, but if you really get the heat treat down right on it, and take advantage of the properties well in the grind and finish, then it is a superb steel. Sure it take a little more care than some other steels for staining, but hey, if you can get it stonewashed and throw some nice EDCi solution on it, you'll never have to worry from my experience.
I really do want to get a bigger Brous, but like I said I just haven't found the right one at the right time. I saw a Tuprin Strife for sale, but I really want the stonewashed blade and not acid washed for my own preferences. I am a little low on cash right now anyway, and I need to save up for my birthday bash this Saturday ;) :D

S30V is just a little bit of a cancer in the knife world to me right now.
