I have a few questions about the Hinderer XM-18.

Where can I get one? i want it for camping this summer?

How have the revisions changed?

On the newest pictures I see, it is no longer stamped with his name? why is that.

why do some have the the flipper and others do not?

Thanks all :D

1. Look around the net, they do turn up.

2. The newest XM's will have CNC machined blades (so he can keep up with demand).

3. You can order an XM from rick in all sorts of combinations, hence, some have flippers, some don't, etc.

Dano's goot it but I suggest you visit Rick Hinderer knives, and keep an eye out on his dealers they do occasionally have one in.
Also keep an eye out on the Custom sale thread here on BF!

Are CNC machined blades a downgrade? What were they before? and what are the benefits of the different ways blades are made?

Before all the blades were ground by Rick Hinderer himself. Newest Xm-18 will be flat ground, and the older one are hollow ground. To tell the truth to me older blades hollow ground with Rick's name engraved on them look nicer.

Sounds like a downgrade. How much are they going for anyway? On the Rick Hinderer site it says about 400 bucks. But on the dealer sites, as soon as they got one it was going for 500. Is that the price people can expect to pay from now on?

I personally like flat grinds over hollow in general. However, the downsides are that they only come in a certain finish which doesn't look as good as the satin finish and there's less collector value because it's no longer being ground by Rick himself. From a purely utilitarian/throw-everything-you-can-at-it perspective, I think it may actually be an upgrade.

Keep in mind, the outsourcing of the grinding is the only change. Everything is hand made by Rick.

Rick is still not taking orders and these are VERY TOUGH to find. I got lucky the other day and bought one off another member here on the forums. I just happen to be on at the right time! This knife is TANK TOUGH! You will just have to not be in a hurry and keep your eyes open. I saw one a couple of weeks ago go for $560 so the prices are all up from his price. GOOD LUCK! Kevin

These are very hard to get now. There is a great demand and only so many XM-18's made. The price on the secondary market will probably be higher now.If the output can be increased or the demand lessened the price may go down.I do'nt believe there is any downgrade on CNC'd blades. From what I've heard Rick is still doing the finishing on the blades.

I also have a new one coming soon, but just now know the blade went to a flat grind . Hollow is much better on a thicker blade like the XM.

Major down grade IMHO....I should add I will be paying much more than what he is listing them for. So I am being a little picky. Gotta pay to jump the wait list a full year :D

Where can I see a new one?

Here ya go (from USN):)

Now I am glad I got mine because that will make the old ones with the blade stamped R. Hinderer tougher to get. BOY AM I LUCKY! Kevin :D:D:D:D

Thanks

I will probably be listing it in the sale section the day I get it. Looks cheap IMHO. I kind of wish I didn't sell the other non flipper 2nd gen I had.

Live and learn, such is life

Meh. Doesn't look that great to me either. I'm kind of dissapointed. Maybe I'll just get something else with my money.

Looks good to me. I'm not sure why that looks "cheaper" than any of the previous versions. Does anyone know if Rick will make custom modifications (when he starts taking orders again). I'd love one without the choil.

The Knife Cellar just had 2 in stock, now they are gone. EDC Knives had 3, but they are sold. You have to look at Rick's dealer sites. You CAN find them.

I agree, they look like crap. Everyone else should put their money into something else an leave all of these downgraded, crappy looking knives to me. I don't mind taking one for the team in this case. :D
