I have 2 pieces of black paper phenolic I bought a few years ago. I lost interest and put it under the workbench and forgot about it.
A friend who does kitchen knife handles wanted some for ferrule material so I will be cutting it up tomorrow.
My question was does anyone think I should cut some larger blocks for fighters or other knives?
The pieces are 1&1/2" thick and 12" x 12".
For ferrule material I was going to cut some 1" to 1&1/4" wide that would be the 1&1/2" thickness and 6 inches long. I figured that size could also be used for normal-ish handles.
But I thought if it were to be used for a sculpted handle fighter that some blocks 2"+ wide, 1&1/2" thick and 6" long might be good.
There won't be a lot so I thought I should check with all of you before I cut this stuff tomorrow.

These photos show the 2 pieces and then a block I cut and sanded to 220 grit. It cut and sanded easier than I had expected. A lot like one of the extra hard woods. This stuff will not be expensive. Just want to cover my cost and time and provide something a few of my regulars have asked for.

I know I for one would be interested in a piece or two of that 1 1/2" stuff if you were to put it on the market. also bog oak :p

I would be interested in a stick or two. BTW, how does one go about making ferrules from this? Would you use something like a tenon cutter for hardwood?

Hi Royce,

pins from this would look nice with the stuff I just bought from you ;)

No dirty pool bud. I figured cut pieces could come from one, and the other could still be available. Leave it the seller to make his own assessment of my offer. Just my two cents.

What are you asking for a whole 12x12 block?

I am not going to sell it as a whole. I figured cutting them up would just be something extra for those who wanted to try some or were looking for thicker blocks. While looking around most of what I saw available with knife making suppliers was thinner scales. Someone mentioned pins. I saw a couple suppliers carry round stock in a few sizes.

Chuck,
I don't plan on cutting scales. Jantz has thin scales cheap.

Rusty,
I had some bog oak arrive from CZ, but the moisture content is 43%.
I don't know if I am going to be able to dry it intact.

I have gone ahead and cut most of this stuff into blocks.
Probably will post a new thread and sell them here instead of my website.
Anyone who wants the black paper micarta in scale form I would suggest looking at some of the bigger knife making supply websites.
Scales are surprisingly cheap. It's just the thick stuff that is tougher to find.
