Dawkind,

You seem to have the best balisong collection on this forum, so I will ask you:

How good is the BM-42 compared to the custom Benchmade balisongs of the Jody Sampson era?

I realize that production is never the same as custom, but how do you like the 42 in terms of quality, flipability, and carryability?

Dawkind has the best collection?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that's great!!!

Where are ya Chuck?

LOL. Dawkind might have the 2nd best, sniperboy certainly would if she didn't sell them all.

I doubt if I can come close to having the best collection but I might be the 'proudest' of what I have and really enjoy sharing it with you folks!

As to the question posed, the 42 is the first bali I ever manipulated that had Ti handles. The customs are much heavier, the handles are larger in diameter and shorter in length. The 42, in it's 4" configuration, is faster than a 4" custom or about as fast as a 3" with stainless handles but easier to hang on to. The 5" customs will really 'beat you up' if you're not acclimated to the weight. I really enjoy carrying and using my 42; it's slim, light weight, and quick to deploy plus if I mess it up I can replace it, unlike most of my others..........

I think Dawkind explained customs versus the 42 very well.

Yeah, better not forget Lew. Dude, when I saw that picture of the Benchmades on that blue towel (not even all of his BMs), I nearly sh!t my pants. The good kind of pants sh!tting, though.

>>Sorry, my bad. Don't forget Lew! He has tons of balisongs also.

I bet I got more butterfly knives than all of you sense I buy them by the hundred

Of course, maybe they are not as nice as what you all got, but the price is right! You guys should know, most of you has bought from me, at one time or another over the last two years. Thanks, JohnR7 www.BalisongKnife.com

Let's try this again:

Dawkind, Chuck, Lew, and Susan have handled or do own lots of BM, PC, and Bali-Song cutlery balisongs.

JohnR7 owns, sells, and handles lots of FHM balisongs and "cheapie" balisongs.

ChungSan sells and handles lots of misc balisongs.

How's that??

First of all, there are many ways to evaluate a collection. Sheer number is not the best measure.

Second, my collection is for me. I don't collect balisongs to impress other people. I enjoy sharing and often do, but I don't need to prove that I am "the king of the hill" because I know that I am not.

Third, I fundamentally believe that the one who dies with the most toys still dies. Jesus says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moths and rust do not destroy and no thieves break in. For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be." He underscores this by telling a story about a rich man who rents bigger and bigger safe deposit boxes to store his balisong collection... or was that builds bigger and bigger bins to store his grain in. I sometimes get things confused.

Over the years, I have been fortunate to amass quite a collection. There are currently 481 catalog numbers assigned. I don't have all of those balisongs still. Some have been traded or sold. I never re-assign a catalog number. I currently have eight balisongs waiting to be catalogged. I don't catalog my common Benchmades, 30, 35, 44, 45, 42, etc. I have some of those which are users and I don't count them at all, and a small stock which I purchased when I heard of the pending discontinuation which I am keeping as future trading fodder. (There. Now maybe people will stop asking me that question.)

Mr. Lew has a very nice collection and his website is a valuable reference since he has posted good pictures of so many different makes and models.

Mr. Dawkind has, over the last months, posted many great pictures of balisongs that he has collected and also of some work that he's doing himself. I'm very pleased to see that he is building a first-class collection.

I am also aware of and have been treated to see some parts of other significant private collections belonging to collectors who, for whatever reason, choose not to post here.

I enjoy discussing balisongs here and sharing the odd piece every now and again especially as they help educate people about these unusual knives. Collecting is not, in my opinion, a contest.

Well said, Chuck. I love your stories that get a point across. I think I'm going to call you Aesop from now on.
