First of all, there are many ways to evaluate a collection. Sheer number is not the best measure.
Second, my collection is for me. I don't collect balisongs to impress other people. I enjoy sharing and often do, but I don't need to prove that I am "the king of the hill" because I know that I am not.
Third, I fundamentally believe that the one who dies with the most toys still dies. Jesus says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moths and rust do not destroy and no thieves break in. For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be." He underscores this by telling a story about a rich man who rents bigger and bigger safe deposit boxes to store his balisong collection... or was that builds bigger and bigger bins to store his grain in. I sometimes get things confused.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to amass quite a collection. There are currently 481 catalog numbers assigned. I don't have all of those balisongs still. Some have been traded or sold. I never re-assign a catalog number. I currently have eight balisongs waiting to be catalogged. I don't catalog my common Benchmades, 30, 35, 44, 45, 42, etc. I have some of those which are users and I don't count them at all, and a small stock which I purchased when I heard of the pending discontinuation which I am keeping as future trading fodder. (There. Now maybe people will stop asking me that question.)
Mr. Lew has a very nice collection and his website is a valuable reference since he has posted good pictures of so many different makes and models.
Mr. Dawkind has, over the last months, posted many great pictures of balisongs that he has collected and also of some work that he's doing himself. I'm very pleased to see that he is building a first-class collection.
I am also aware of and have been treated to see some parts of other significant private collections belonging to collectors who, for whatever reason, choose not to post here.
I enjoy discussing balisongs here and sharing the odd piece every now and again especially as they help educate people about these unusual knives. Collecting is not, in my opinion, a contest.
