Questions from a neophyte

Actually, I am reading some reviews that the knife is *too* smooth, in that it tends to open in the pocket. Is it missing a ball detent or something? I really wouldn't want to carry a knife that had that "feature"...

I don't own one of these so i can't answer.

That's alright.

So close! ;)

If it didn't (maybe) have that problem, I would have given serious thought to purchasing it.

Re-EDIT: Forget the OD-2, is the OD-1 a good choice? It looks like the flipper might catch on clothing, but I like how it looks, and the blade geometry seems very useable. I can get both at around the same price, so I figured, why not upgrade?

I also looked at the Vic Outrider and the Leatherman Squirt PS4, and both seem relatively nice. I guess one handed opening is, at this point, nice but not strictly necessary. Given their similar prices (but greater than the OD-1) and that I will be complementing, not supplanting my SwissCard, can anyone comment on their relative bang for the buck? FWIW I carried a CRKT Guppie for a while, and found that I never used the screwdrivers, but the wrench thing came in handy.

I was looking at a nice looking knife the other day by Kershaw. The crown II I think. It uses a lower end steel but its the same stuff as the Spyderco Tenacious blade, and I'm satisfied with that. Polished black micarta handles, tumb stud, and lock back if I recall correctly. I don't think its out yet though. (If it is and someone has it, tell me what you think!)

That's nice looking, and for the price point, micarta is incredible.

It does have a button lock, which looks to be in the center of the grip. Maybe it's fine, but it looks easy to accidentally disengage.

Antikythera, glad you didn't take offense to my last post. Sometimes I'm a little brusque with my rather blunt demeanor (and I make puns too!). However, I'm glad I was able to help, and understand your thought process. Personally, if I'm REALLY self conscious, I have a rainbow kershaw scallion, or one of those tiny Ken Onion assisted folders that I received from my brother for Christmas years back. I've found that a good demeanor works just fine with my delica. Eventually I'd like to go full William Henry, or even better, customs with mastodon tusk and all that jazz...

On to a salient topic: I would NEVER carry a liner lock tip up, even though tip up is my preference. I have a spyderco military that's a fine knife, but I have to adjust each day I carry it because it is tip down. If anyone razzes you over a slipjoint/slippie style knife, BS some story how it was a gift from your grandfather who told you to carry it with you to remind you of him when he died. Should shut them up rather quickly. :D

No problem, it's cool. I see where you are coming from, and your honesty is not only welcome, but valuable. What can I say, I'm new here! :p

It's not so much self-consciousness (I have used my SwissCard and Guppie plenty of times in public) but I prefer to remain as unnoticeable as possible, just out of preference. I am, shall we say... darker skinned, and just passing through an airport (oh the stories I can tell... ), despite being polite, friendly, and organized, I still get looks (and "random screening," of course) from the TSA people. Needless to say, I would prefer to not carry a "scary looking" knife, as I am sure trouble would ensue, almost regardless of environment.

I would like to carry a slippie/slippie-style knife, but they are a bit pricey, and being a student, price is the first concern.

I'm looking at SAKs (the Tinker comes to mind) right now, and might buy the OD-2 for grins and giggles.

Should I not carry a liner lock TU because of it opening in the pocket? Does that extend to other knives as well, as I carry my D4 TU...

I love the "grandfather gave it to me" story, BTW! That's a great idea!

Ahh... that makes sense about being aware of your projected threat profile. Having an apple is actually a better EDC than a baguette- and, unfortunately, I would recommend it as a way to put people at ease. Depending on where you are, getting a used slippie isn't that expensive- sub $50 certainly.

On the linerlock issue, I'll admit I haven't used all that many unique locks- I've had liners, lockbacks, frame, axis, slip, and played with spyderco's ball bearing. The ones I would advise caution with are slippies, liners, and frames. I myself carry a waved delica4- which means tip up, otherwise the wave would be useless. No worries- there's a strong detent to close, which is what to look for. The problem with liners and the like is there generally isn't a detent to close, so they open in the pocket easily. Any other questions, I'll be more than happy to answer. If you want some more in depth tips on reducing threat profile, taking into account the steps you've already said you've taken, reply to this thread or PM me- more than happy to help a fellow fans of blades exercise their passion.

On the grandfather thing, I was influenced by a friend who spent a year in Germany, going to the 5th year of high school they have there. One German girl came up and started haranguing him about the USA's treatment of Native Americans- very passionately. He waited to a breaking point and then replied, "My grandfather's Jewish".

Alright, thanks for your offer, but I don't think there is much more to be done at this point. Interesting story, btw.

I think that I will either get the OD-1 or 2 (both are in the $20 range) to carry, but while the OD-1 is classier (IMO) and made of better materials, is the size still conducive for pocket carry? For reference, the D4 absolutely disappears in my pocket when I do carry it. In fact, the first day I carried it, I forgot about it and "lost" it the day after until I checked the pants I had worn the previous day. Something I'm going to have to get used to... :D

FWIW, I plan to buy an Opinel 4 sometime soon, and a Vic is on the list as well.

I picked those Kershaws because the other knives had something that I think would have kept me from carrying them (except possibly the Dragonfly), and I am on a pretty serious budget. $50 was the upper limit, the lower the better.

Yes, I do understand that I get what I pay for. Just look up the flashlight I mentioned in the first post, and you'll see. Money well spent on a quality product, after much research and searching.

However, I have come to the conclusion am content with my D4, I don't plan on replacing it, and I just want a small, relatively easily replaceable (just in case) pocket carry knife, for tasks that are a little too large for the Swiss Card.

I plan to spend the money saved on a Mora and either a set of DMT whetstones or a Sharpmaker. Money well spent to begin with, I think.

On a side note, does anyone have suggestions as to what sharpening system I should start with (on a budget, but if it's a "shouldn't have to replace them" sort of thing, then I am willing to splurge a little)?

No offence but delica freaking out the sheeple? your kidding right?

I've never had anyone even bat a eye when I use my delica, my millie scares the crap out f sheeple but most just call the delica "cute". If your within your legal rights I personally would not care what others think.

My pick, G10 dfly
