I have some questions concerning Canola oil as a quenchent.

How would it be for use with 1080 or 1095?

Does it go bad or get rancid like vegetable oil would?

My shop gets very hot at times and with it sitting in a quench vessel in the heat, (heat index this past week has been 105-117), or for long periods of time.

How long before it would go bad? I don't want to invest in a bunch of smelly oil!

I know everyone is saying buy the good stuff, right now circumstances does not permit that! (I have champagne taste on a beer budget, as the saying goes)! :p:D:D

I use canola oil for Admiral Steel 1075/1080 and I'm pleased with the results. I have heard that it is too slow for 1095, but someone with more knowledge than I will speak up on that.

i save my used canola oil from my deep fryer and use that. i keep it in a jug when i'm done so if it does smell, i wont smell it till i need to quench a blade again. i have used a mix of motor oil and transmission fluid but i cant say how much of each i used. i have a jug mixed up that i use if i'm quenching a large blade. for small blades i use the canola oil.

what sort of container do you put the oil in when you are quenching your blade?
is it a metal container and is it shallow or deep? how much oil do you need to quench?
