Questions on friction folders

Just trying to wrap my head around a few design elements here before I "attempt" a project this weekend.

Are scales (wood or man made) strong enough to support general usage without metal liners? if so, do they need to be extra thick with large diameter pins? Do you need a spacer on on the pin furthest from the pivot (bottom of the handle) or is the epoxy on the pins enough to prevent the scales from being crushed together so far from where the blade is acting like a spacer?

While just about everything has been done on a folder, in general you want some sort of brass, stainless, or other metal liner. It has to do with alignment as much as strength.

I've not seen liners on a friction folder and they are still made in Spain. I think Andujar sells them for $6 or so. The washers on the outside create the necessary friction to prevent a freely moving blade. Horn was the traditional handle material and in some cases it was two pieces pinned together.

Friction foldes made from antler need a washer between the blade and handle materal. the antler is pourious and needs something for a smoother friction fit. Horn handles work OK but will last longer with a liner or washer. wood usuly needs a washer or liner as humidity affects it. Mycarta works fine.
