I've noticed this also. That point is a lot stronger than it appears, but it does suffer minor damage from use at the very end. Perhaps they decided to hedge their bets by making it a bit shorter and stiffer? If you look at the Matriarch prototyps, you'll notice they have substantially less tip than a Civie, though this may just be due to the requirements of the handle.
Both of my Civies (G-2 aluminum, ATS-55 G-10) measure just a hair over 4" tip to handle. I won't attempt to calculate the edge length! Both have suffered minor point damage, but this doesn't affect length much as the point is more downward than outward by the end.
