OK, I have a few questions. First of all, what kind of metal are lawn mower blades and railroad spikes made out of? Something suitable for a good knife? If railroad spikes are useable thern that would save me alot of time shaping as they are already near what I want. Also for the aforementioned, assuming they are useable, and leaf spring steel, what temperatures would I need to temper them? Could it be done in an oven? Oh, last thing, do you have to anneal the steel? I will be using a bench grinder.

Thanks,
Cody

Get known steel and pick up a copy of $50 Knife Shop by Wayne Goddard. Also do what kbaknife said to do. Also use the search function of this forum. It will save you a lot of time and you will be able to find your answer a lot quicker.

Welcome to the forums.
Filling out your profile helps a lot.
The steels mentioned are unknown and may be good or useless. You don't know, so it is best not to use them.
Using a known steel is the way to start.
Searches on this sub-forum will show that the info you asked has been posted almost weekly for years.
A good place to check it the getting started sticky at the top of the page.
www.knifehow.com also has a lot of info.
Getting several books (listed in the sticky) will be your best start.
