Hello all,
I am curious as to the "normal" method of transactions that take place on the forums. You all have been quite helpful in the past with prior questions. I'm selling a knife and have been told that the common practice is for both buyer and seller to send knife/payment at the same time? Is this true? Does anyone do something different? Thanks in advance!

Still saving for my first Busse!

ToxMedic, welcome to the forums.

That practice is one that may or may not fit into your comfort zone.

Not to get into a long philosophical debate, go with the method that is best for you.

My 2 cents:

If buying, use US Postal Money Orders. They are trackable, and any fraud can be prosecuted as Mail Fraud by the Post Master Generals Office. This affords the buyer a higher level of protection.

If selling, it is your call as to whether you trust the buyer to have your funds en route at the same time as the artifact. If you know your seller, it will most likely be cool. If not, your call. Check the Good, Bad, Ugly forum. It can give a warning light for those unsavory characters who rip others off.

What Busse are you saving for??

Thanks for the input Thatmguy! I'm saving for a SH-E w/CG after input from the great people on this forum.

If it's the 1st time, I wait until I get the cash in hand before I ship.
If the person is well known and has a good rep on the forum, I'll ship at the same time.
I always ship USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Conf.
And if it's more than I'm willing to pay out if it's lost, I'll get insurance on it.

Paypal with a credit card. Instantanious payment, and with a credit card, if you get ripped off, you can do a charge back......

ToxMedic1, welcome to the forum.
Wilco's right on! If I'm buying I always try to use Paypal/credit card. That way you have the credit card company, and Paypal to fall back on. I had one bad experience with a seller on Ebay, who neither replied to my emails, nor shipped the knife I had ordered from him. I made a formal complaint to Paypal, and, after a waiting period, got credit for the transaction.
If I sell an Item,I always wait for payment before shipping.
I always ship Priority Mail with delivery confimation. If it's an item of value( your determination ), I always add insurance.
I've only been involved in about 6 trades so far on the forums. I always check the feedback. On my first trade on the forums, since the other party had several positive feedbacks and I had none, I was willing to ship my knife first for inspection. But we both sent and received our knives at the same time, and both of us were happy with the trade.
I also always make it known that all trades are reversable, so that both parties are satisfied.
I hope this helps.

That's exactly the way I handle it. On trades, you should both ship simultaneously. If you get uncomfortable about someones communication, or just don't like what you see from them on the forums-just don't do it. If you get a bad feeling, there's probably a reason for it, and you're not obligated to deal with anyone you don't want to. Most of the people around here seem go to go, though there are always exceptions.

Excellent advice so far.

One other note, be cautious of sellers that want payment with strange terms, (for example Western Union transfer overseas).

At least if the seller is in the states you can usually find them or another forumite is close enough to check them out if problems arise.

This is a topic to which I've taken a very firm stance. When selling a knife my rule is simple and non-negotiable. I will not ship anything until I've received the payment. However at that point I will ship immediately without delay to the receiving party. From the flip side I will never expect another seller to ship me anything until he has received my payment.

I don't do this to be a "stiff ass" as I've been called several times in different forms...actually the exact opposite. I've made many friends here on the forums, some of which have several transactions with me each year. My number one concern is never putting myself in any situation that even has the potential to become questionable or damaging.

Best way I've found to do that, is the standard retail business model because there is no room for opinion or discussion.

Buyer pays seller...THEN...seller gives buyer his/her/it's merchandise.

Trading is another story, I take each one of those on case by case basis since so many more variable come into play

It's worked very well for me over the years, and I don't recall ever getting into a questionable or undesirable situation with another member.

That's fine if that works for you but I wouldn't
hesitate to same day ship to someone who has some positive
history here at Bladeforums. I don't think you would
very likely get burned by someone like Gig One or
Eric Issacson. In my opinion the buyer takes just
as much risk especially if the seller has little
or no positive history here at BF.

I've recently had a bad trade, not through any fault of the the chap I was trading with though, He was wonderful, but between the UK Post Office and the USPS they managed to *lose*, a SOG SEAL 2000 which I was using as a partial trade for a SH-e. Real bummer, so always, always insure everything. At the end of the day you have to consider that its not just you and the other guy there are intermediaries involved too.

Rant over:D
