So, I want to set up two more 220 outlets in my garage. I'm just wondering about the plugs/outlets. What type should I use?

Let me know if more clarification is needed.

You can get male and female plugs at Lowes etc. I run a 50 amp configuration on all my stuff. You can also get standard clothes dryer plugs.

I had a friend help me put 220 outlets in my shop and I remember him saying that the outlets should match the breaker rating. I believe there are 15, 20, and 50 amp ratings.???

I looked for one that had a twist lock, and then bought breakers to match the plugs/outlets.

How far is the garage from the main pannel? Calculate your load versus distance to find out what AWG size needed to bring the power in. If it has to go far you will need thicker cables. Electrical suppliers are a good source of information, and in doubt go one size larger.

The answers above are correct.

The old saying from electricians is:
"If you have to ask that question, you should get an electrician to do it for you !"

Cuts heal - Electrocution doesn't. Be safe -

Not sure what your reg's are like down south, but up in Canada (Sask.) if you don't get a homeowner's permit and anything should happen afterwards, (ie: fire) kiss your house insurance good bye! Check your local building codes to be safe. Sometime's it's safer to hire the proper trade, and make sure they are insured as well. Cover Your Arse!

I'm a Chief Engineer in a steam plant by trade, and shoddy electrical work has come closer to killing me more times than anything else. This includes motorcycle riding and close calls shooting / hunting. (there's been a few of those!) Take care.

Thanks for the replies guys. I would like the electrician to do it. Our insurance is like that- if a fire occurs because of wiring I did, were screwed.

Thanks again
Alex

there is a good book out there called wiring simplified. $10 at home depot. It hase tables to calculate wire size based on distance from source. The info in the book comes from the NEC.

When ever I do electrical I run all the lines connect outlets etc and leave it all exposed and call an electrician to make the connection to the breaker box and inspect my work. Of course it helps that I have 2 friends from a former job who are licensed electricians.
