Quick and dirty firesteel handle

I was fiddling around with a box of PSK parts and found a couple ferrocerium rods. I went looking through my junk bin for a ready made handle and came up with the top from a turned wood ball point pen body. I reamed the opening just a tad and tapped the rod in. Voila-- instant fire pen! Now I have a firesteel with a handy-dandy pocket clip

That's pretty neat. What's the thickness of the ferro rod?

1/4". I'm sure you'll find a lot of pen barrel sizes, but a drill and/or a little JB Weld epoxy will take care of "manufacturing variations." :)

I like this-- no weenie handle to try to pinch. You can really grab this one.

Hah, that's a pretty cool idea. You could incorporate the firesteel like a pen blank into the lower portion as well and have a concealed firesteel. You know, for firesteel emergencies. I'm totally going to make one. :)

You could use the pen blank kits for turning your own pens and groove the bottom half and insert a metal strip with a good square edge to use as a scraper. In a perfect world, there would be room in the bottom half for a little tinder.

One of these days I need to get to a local cabinet supply and check out cabinet knobs for firesteel handles.

That's a darned clever idea.

Let us know how it holds up.
