Quick and Dirty shelter building !

What kind/brand would you recommend? I'm thinking of getting one, but don't know where to start.

Given how much time and energy it can take to build a shelter from natural materials, bringing a shelter along can be a lifesaver.

As an emergency shelter, a 5'X8' SilNylon Poncho (Mine is Integral Designs) would be handy. It is small enough that it fits in a (larger) cargo pocket and light enough (10 oz) that you won't be as likely to leave it at home as you would a heavier tarp. It also can serve as emergency rain gear so you can get that warm feeling of carrying multiple-use gear!

Another alternative is the AMK HeatSheet (2 Person) which is also 5'X8'. It doesn't have grommets or tie-outs, but is much smaller, lighter (3.5 oz) and cheaper. You can reinforce the corners with duct tape ahead of time and refold it to fit your pocket. You'll still have room for an AMK Emergency Bivvy (3.5 oz) as well.

Nice post, Great pics as always.

This is an importans lesson for all of us. and another reason why including shelter materials in a kit makes sense.
