Quick and dirty tempering of O-1

Hi guys! I would like to find out what some of you are using to temper your blades. I have considered some of the counter top ovens, but don't know if they will get hot enough. I am using O-1 and will be tempering in the 300 to 400 range. I have also considered using a kiln, but that will have to wait until after the holidays. I just need a quick and in-expensive set-up to get me through. Thanks, David

I use a toaster oven to temper my O1, I jsut put a firebrick in the toaster oven to help regulate the temp, and i put my own oven thermometer inside so i can tell the actual temp (i set mine for ~350 and i actually get around 400)

The kitchen oven will do fine. Check it out with a oven thermometer, as ovens are not always accurately calibrated. The big thing is to fully pre-heat the oven to the desired temp for at least 10-15 minutes before putting the blade in.

Thanks for the replies. Just picked up an $18.88 special at the local grocery giant. We'll see how she works. Thanks again, David

Ok, 350-400. for how many minutes, hours?
Thanks

If you use the kitchen oven, make sure you clean off all the quenching fluid ( I usually use old motor oil). If you don't, it makes the house smell and the oven too. This is one of the reasons I like using a toaster oven, dedicated for tempering and heating kydex.

400 For 1-1/2 hours, bring to room temp then do it again

And this will get you what on the RC scale. Just curious. Thanks. I have got a couple I am working that is 01 also. I would like to get RC about 59-60.

This blade has been hardened right?
You have to take it up to around 1500 (not sure of exact temp for O1) soak and quench before you temper it.

Why not use vegetable oil.
Then you'll just smell like a McDs. ;)

I use olive oil for my heat treat quench with O-1 then pizza stone on top shelf and bottom of oven to even out heat and shield blade from infrared, preheat oven 20-30 minutes to 425 f. blade goes
in wire holder edge up in the center of a baking sheet on the middle shelf between the pizza stones for 45 minutes, that brings it to a light straw gold oxide color then water quench, repeat 2 more times. according to the little chart on the wrapper of the metal 425 should give a rockwell of 58-60. I follow that with a torch draw on the spine to bright blue oxide color until I bring a blood red oxide color about halfway across the blade or until the straw color is threatening to get too close to the edge, I stop the heat crawl with a water quench.
