Hey guys may seem like a dumb question but I searched and couldn't find a solid answer. With my first knife I am using linen micarta for the handles. how thick should I order the micarta? 1/8 seems like it would be a skinny handle but i'm not sure! What do you guys use?

For any knife bigger than ~3'' I use 3/8. You can always sand more off if it's too thick for what you made.

I may try that because as has been said to me many times, can always take more off cant put it back

If you like a certain material and cant find it in the thickness you want , you could try adding a liner of a contrasting material to bring the thickness up to what you want .

Depends on how big the knife is, and how much distal taper taper you give the handle.

I almost never use thicker than 1/4".

Like Eric said, if you want it an 1/8" thicker, just to make sure, use liner material.

If I do decide to add a liner would I epoxy the liner to the tang and handle? I'm assuming so

Absolutely.

I epoxy the liners to the scales before I even cut the scales to profile. It's just easier to glue rectangles to same size rectangles. It doesn't waste anything to speak of.

Always have with a layer or two of glossy paper between the liners. It sucks when they don't come apart.
