My classes got cancelled for the day a few fridays ago, and I managed to sneak out with My buddy Chris for a quick overnight. We got to a late start.. and we where expecting snow overnight but it turned out great..It was just what the doctor ordered.

I found hemlock that was broken in half by a deadfall oak and decided to make a bow bed before setting up my poncho shelter

Nice place - gotta love that brisk! How thick was your bow mattress?

Ken, Not thick enough LOL about 5 inches uncompressed. with me on it maybe 3
it was fairly warm and comfortable though..
I think I slept 9 hours straight.. an camp out record for me.

Glad you took the opportunity to get out...even a night is refreshing to the soul. Love the area and it's always good to have those available for the shorter trips.

If prepared right, I think I actually get better sleep in the hammock or on the ground rather than the bed at home:D

Damn, I don't get that in the best of circumstances!

Looks like it was an awesome trip! I always have a hard time going to sleep in camp because I'm always enjoying the peace and tranquility, but once I am asleep I sleep reeeeally well. What size zebra do you have? I have a 10cm I got mainly for bullion and coffee and I have a tatonka I use for soups and such but I am thinking now about a larger zebra as well because I like the looks of how that bannock turned out using the double boiler. I am wondering if I can get by with a 12cm or if I'd need to go up to a 14cm

9 hours  I don't even get that sleeping at home.

Sounds (and looks) like you had a good time.

I find Hemlock harder to make a beg out of than say Eastern White pine but that's just me. Nice to see a poncho used for a shelter. :)

Hemlock was all there was....no pine or spruce, and it was already snapped at the trunk as I mentioned.. so I figured, why waste it.

I think its great that you were able to use a downed tree to gather your materials like that. But on the other issue, you just gotta use what you have at hand. One of the big challenges about "relying" on your ability to make a natural shelter involved the confidence you have that the site you will camp in will furnish the materials you need. Some areas have materials a plenty, but others can be really inhospitable and it might not just be a matter of moving a km or two to hit Shangri-La.
