Friday I got to handle an Izula for the first time. Great knife, but this one was extremely hard to draw from the sheath.

Those that have had them awhile, was that normal at first and does it get better after some use?

Mine's still pretty tight, and I've drawn and sheathed it a lot, cause I'm a wierdo and I like looking at my Izula. Best way is to push on the sheath with your thumb as you're drawing the knife.

If you watch the knife when you put it in the sheath you will see two little black pieces that slide over the finger guard, the more you sheath and unsheath it these little pieces will wear away making it easy to pull out, of course you could just save yourself some time and use sandpaper.

The sheath does wear in a little.
Also you get used to the motion required to pop the knife out easily.

Also in general, I would rather have knife be too hard rather than too easy to extract. :)

Yeah, as others said, you pop it out with the thumb more than you draw. After a little while you will get the feeling of how to do it quickly and efficiently.

When people are not used to molded or kydex sheath, they tend try to draw the knife out by using a small amount of pull and gradually increasing the amount of pulling force until the knife comes out. This results in two things - 1) the knife suddenly pulls free and carries momentum with it that you weren't expecting making you think - woaw that was a close one and 2) you get the feeling that it takes way too much force to pull the knife out, mostly because you wasted a lot of static energy during the prolonged draw.

If you use a short popping motion with the thumb, you circumvent these issues and the knife comes out in a controlled fashion. RC-sheaths are all very well designed for the "thumb-push" being that they are surrounded by sheath material on both sides of the blade.

One critique I have of the Izula sheath is that I find it harder to insert the knife back into the sheath than the RC products. I just find the little izula sheath a bit more finnicky in the knife angle and placement into its close fitting sheath. Usually not a problem, just a slight annoyance.

Thanks folks, I will say I really like the Izula now that I have handled one. They only had 2 OD ones, and I want the tan one, so I'll have to order it.

My Izula sheath was kinda tight at first also but after I drew it the 200th time in the first week I had it the sheath loosened up a bit;). No but really my green Izula has some black lines on it from the coating eating the sheath a little over the last two weeks now it is just about right .

I carry mine verticle (upside down) and use my little finger in the hole to give a little more inertia to overcome the resistance. It has gotten a little bit easier with time, though it is still very secure.

My DT Izula came today, wow wicked SHARP little sucker!!!

I was also surprised that it comes out of the sheath noticeably easier than the 2 I tried at the store.

Props to Okbohn (Derrick) at KSF for fast service!!!!!

I have to bring this thread back from the dead to ask if anyone has a problem with the izula (or any RC knife) sitting to loose in the sheath after you've had it for a long time?

I had a problem a while ago, until I noticed it was my paracord wrap that was getting in the way ... :o

After I adjusted that, the Izula is pretty secure in the sheath, only if you shake it sideways you hear it rattle a little. But it still is so secure in the sheath I have no problem using it as a necker or with a mercharness.

Expect rattle from any injection molded sheath. Had no problems with mine, haven't had them all that long or drawn them all that much, but it's a resilient plastic that flexes away rather than wears out too bad. So I expect many years of good service.

If you want a rattle free sheath, grab one from kydex, someone makes some for the izula as a regular item I just can't remember who.

The Izula sheath does wear down after use, but it still holds the knife in securely. If you're ever worried about it loosening too much you can drill a hole with an awl and put in an adjustment screw (screw+wing nut). I did this when the knife started to rattle in the sheath, but there's no need (for the time being) because the knife is still very much secured in the sheath.

You can also heat the sheath at the point where it retains the knife, and pinch the plastic together...careful tho....do it very gradually.
