Here's a quick look at the Cold Steel Hold Out II folder. I just heard about this knife a few days ago, and being a fan of the CS lineup I had to get my hands on one.

Specs:

Blade Length: 4"
Blade Thickness: 3.5 mm
Overall Length: 9"
Steel: Japanese AUS 8A Stainless
Weight: 4.2 oz
Handle: 5" Long G-10
Pocket Clip: Stainless Pocket / Belt Clip

MSRP: $104.99
Street price: $63.00 shipped if you know where to look. [Edit: or less, actually].

This is a Cold Steel knife in every way, with the strong Tri-ad back lock, heavy duty G10 and solid construction. Its about the same size as the Recon 1 and AK-47. What immediately struck me, though, was the lack of finger grooves and scale sculpting which is so prominent on the other CS folders. Whereas the AK-47 is designed in such a way as to almost grip your hand like fly paper, the Hold Out is sleek and smooth like a stiletto. I knew this going in, but its degree of sleekness does not sink in until you get your hands on one.

As you can see, there are no finger grooves or ergo sculpting whatsoever. The Hold Out does have good jimping above and below, and a single, small cutout for your index finger, and this helps a lot. But this is not a knife for stabbing or plunge cutting, as I would be afraid that my hand would slide up the blade.

And its a sharp, beautifully shaped blade which CS claims is reminiscent of "the Black Knife or Skean Dhu (Gaelic) of the ancient Scottish warriors." I have no idea what that means, but its a good looking knife to my eyeballs.

Also notable are the milled holes in the G10, which add a little traction to some already grippy G10 but I see as mostly there for looks. The large Hold Out II shown has 4 holes, while the smaller Hold Out III has 3, which is an easy way to identify them. The hole closest to the clip provides an excellent grip point for pulling the knife out of the pocket, which is cool.

I have a few days of pocket time with this one, and it rides nicely in the vertical pocket on a pair of 5-11's. As will all CS folders, I'll need to sand down the G10 under the clip to prevent the shredding of my pockets.

I must acknowledge that I came very close to selling this knife, and I almost never sell knives. It was such a departure from the Recon 1 and AK that I just did not dig it at first. But its smooth lines have grown on me, and I appreciate the minimalist G10 shape which makes it much easier to slide my hand in my pocket relative to the Recon 1 and AK-47.

So far so good, and I'm like this one more each day. The FFG blade profile, razor sharpness out of the box, solid construction, Tri-ad lock and overall look of this knife make it a winner. I see it as a large, good looking utility blade, though I would not hesitate to use it in a last option life or death defensive role, God forbid.

Size comparo with the 2010 Recon 1. Note the streamline profile for good looks and easy pocketability.

Compare the sculpting of the AK-47, but at the cost of eating up pocket space.

Are you saying the G-10 is not grippy enough to make you feel secure if you had to use it in SD?

I would say that the CS Hold Out G10 is very grippy. Probably the most grippy I have encountered, and on par with the other CS offerings. Its not a slick knife like, lets say, a Spyderco Lum Chinese, which is like a greasy icicle when it comes to grip.

What I'm saying in my little review is that relative to the AK-47 and the Recon 1, the Hold Out is way less grippy by virtue of its lack of finger grooves and ergonomic sculpting. But it still provides a high degree of traction. Its all relative. Hope that makes sense.

thanks for the review. I have the smaller version on the way. It took a while to decide which size to go with and the recent pics here of the 3 pushed me in that direction, plus I have enjoyed a few smaller folders lately. Doesn't hurt that the price was right, too:)

my hold out 3 is on the way, I like its slim profil and I want to try the cold Steel tri ad lock.
I want to give it a try as bushcraft last dith knife ;-)

Powernoodle very good review and pics! Out of the new line I am most interested in this on and the large voyagers. One thing though, the blade is supposed to be four inches ala the Recon but looks a bit shorter, is that a funky angle or what?

The Taiwanese seem to be creating superlative examples of AUS8 for Cold Steel; have a few CS knives and have been impressed with them all.

According to the 2011 Cold Steel catalog. They are importing the Japanese Aus 8 to Taiwan for final assembly.

Powernoodle: Thank you for the review. I just bought one of these. Now if they would only release the 2011 Voyagers!

Nice insight Powernoodle. I had overlooked this pattern in the new lineup because of it's lack of ergos but now that you point out the conservation of pocket space these simple lines make possible the Counter Point may deserve a closer look.

Hey, thanks for the review - any chance of posting some side pics - to see the thickness of the scales and how the blade fits in when folded, also those of the jimping.

Thanks in advance,

Ian

I ike the look of this knife. Alas, the lack of an ergonomic grip seems impractical; that and I find the few Cold Steel folders I have harder to open than those of most any other manufacturer.

I like the similarities it has to an Emerson A100 (favorite folder design ever) Seems like it would have the same highlight of being equally comfortable in every grip position, sometimes simple is better.

really good review!

VEry cool knife. Not my speed for the mail reasons you stated. The ergos don't encourage grip. But a nice design nonetheless for most any task but self defense. Thanks for the review.

The handle ergonomics are much better than I initially expected.

Like Powernoodle says, it is much better than the handle of the Spyderco Lum Large Chinese — I just don't get much of a grip on it at all — even though I really like the blade shape.

It is tricky to get it open. The lock bar resistance is stiff to be sure.

Edited to add:

The blade is actually full flat-ground, not hollow as stated before in the catalog.

That's it, I'm getting one. I love my American Lawman (my first CS knife) but like the Hold Out's relatively neutral shaping. That means more comfortable gripping area. Also, a 4" blade is always sweet. Thanks for the review Powernoodle!

(EDITED) Well, I ordered one. It'll be here tomorrow. Knowing how much I love my American Lawman this is the first knife in a long list of knives I own that I'm really hyped about.
