Yesterday afternoon I biked over to where I could pick up the Tunxis trail about 3 miles from my front door. I had checked out a map and picked a likely place to camp next to a little tiny pond, right near where the trail crossed a small river. It was about a 2 mile hike over some steep hills to the spot.

I left the house at about 3 pm, but didn't make it to the camp spot until about 5 pm. I had a very difficult time finding where the trail went from the road into the woods (a 4-5 year old walking along the road with his grandmother was able to point me in the right direction), and I got turned around a little on the trail itself where it made a sharp turn without any warning (and another trail continued in a straight line)

Some nice ferns:

So I made it to where I wanted to camp and discovered that the little pond really was tiny. Only about 50 meters long and about 30 wide. At one end was a dam which gave me some nice water flowing sounds all night. Once I arrived at my spot I sat down to have a snack and I heard some rustling behind me where I had just come down the trail. I looked back and saw a black bear pop out onto the trail about 15 or 20 meters behind me. It paused and I made a little bit of noise (a friendly greeting) to let it know I was there, and it walked off on the other side of the trail.

I kept it super simple last night. For shelter, I only took my MSR E-Bivy, with no sleeping bag or blanket. I brought along a long sleeve athletic shirt, and I wore a spandex-y t-shirt and shorts. It rained pretty hard for a little while, and I wished I had brought my tarp, but it cleared up and everything was fine. I hardly got wet at all because I was under the leaf cover. I was a little chilly in the middle of the night, and I don't plan on leaving my blanket at home anymore.

Looking up, at dusk:

I brought a bratwurst for dinner, which I cooked over a very small fire (I used almost none of the larger wood in the photo, almost all kindling and pinkie sized pieces).

I had a very nice afternoon to myself in the woods, just relaxing and enjoying the sounds of water.

Some fun with my headlamp and a long exposure after dark:

What I woke up to:

I cleaned up and headed out almost soon as I woke up, eating an apple on the way out for breakfast.

Sounds like you had a great time bro
I dunno but seeing a black bear would've freaked me out a liitle

Simon's still around:eek:

I thought you dissapeared since discovering girls and all their lovely attributes:D

Glad you're still around buddy, great pics:thumbup:

Tony, I always have time for camping! And of course it doesn't take long to post up a couple of pics...

Good stuff Siguy. Looks like pretty scenery, I also love the sound of water nearby. Pretty minimalist gear though. No ponch or anything for a makeshift tarp? Also I wouldn't be caught dead out in my woods in shorts and a short-sleeve t. The skeeters would just carry me away.

Yeah man! Great get away spot my friend. Just a little time away by yourself like that will do wonders for you, my kind of therapy. The long exposure pics are too cool!

Simon,

Great pics.. I miss being able to pop out alone like that... What blades did you bring?

Those are great pics Siguy.. I wish i had something like that close to where i live.. Wake up next to a small lake... lucky guy you are.

Love the pics Siguy and that really sounds and looks like a neat place to spend the night out.

What, no pics of the bear?!
Looks like good little retreat, can't beat getting out to such a nice spot for the night.

Good to see some pics from you again siguy.

Thanks for sharing - looks like a great place to spend the night.

right on Simon... nice to see you around man...:) i've been wondering where you've been....

cool pics..:D

Good pics. I probably would have brought a fleece and tarp, but I have a tendency to pack a little heavy. No knife pics?

Nice camp Simon. Stay away from girls, they will make you eat broccoli and green beans even if you don't like them! I like your pictures. We must catch up buddy.

Great stuff buddy , that was truly minimalist eh !!! Did ya have a knife, did I miss it ?

Good for you Simon, give me a call man...I have some new toys you might like.

Thanks for the comments guys...It was a little too minimalist, I am going to at least have my fleece from now on. I sewed a couple of those fleece throws together, and then sewed a foot pocket into the bottom of it, and it makes a nice lightweight sleeping quilt type thing for summer camping.

The mosquitoes were all over me, and I wished I had brought some pants. They also got at my face through my head net...I couldn't really puff it out enough to keep them away from my face.

I usually bring more gear and make sure I am more comfortable, but I figured I would just go super minimalist and see how I fared.

I had a small fixed blade that I tossed together, and my Fiskars slide saw. I'll post up pics of the knife when I get some time tomorrow morning.
