I've always been pleased when a knife is shipped with a pocket slipcase. I'm not so sure they would have to be custom made for each knife. You could have a few different sizes in stock to choose from. Small, medium and large should do it.
Personally, I have a drawer full of empty zipper cases if you need some. :D

Thanks Kevin and good input Gary, here is the fine italian leather case I speak of, fits 90% of my slipjoints, the softest leather I have ever touched. It was 45$ from Bob Glassman. I feel a knife over 500$, lets say, should accompany a case of this quality. And probably 2 sizes would be sufficient.

Thank you all for the input thus far. Some great ideas, suggestions and observations.

At this point I am thinking that I will be offering a choice. From what has been posted, it makes the most sense.

Let me ask this, as far as slipcases go, any thoughts to a open top design compared to the design illustrated by Kris? (MT Damascus)

I will be letting the poll run until tomorrow and then close it down. I think it is pretty clear that the two options are doable and warranted when a knife ships.

Personally, I don't care for slipcases/pocket sheathes with fold over tops (and any kind of retention). I prefer to be able to reach into my pocket and retrieve my knife with no extra fumbling.

The old "pocket protector" style which holds the knife upright (vertically) would be my personal preference. (I think you saw mine when you were here if I recall correctly.)

I'm all for the slipcase and if yer concern is the safety in shippin' than I'd go with the zippered case, although a xlipcase in a zippered case would really be nice... ;)

My favorite case is the one that came with my Scagel. It is very thick robust leather, crafted very well, and it is nice a firm. You squeeze the stitched together ends and the knife drops right in or out. Tight as can be when you release the sides.

Its the only knife I have carried in a case.

My Richard Rogers came in a felt case that the top folds over and has a simple piece of velcro. Don't know if that was direct from the maker, I bought it second hand. Its an okay case, and much more compact, but I prefer the leather one pictured above.

I would prefer a zippered storage case, even if the knife is intended to be used. I might want a "slip case" (knife purse) also but I'd want a storage case regardless. Giving the customer the option may be the best route.

Joel Chamblin also uses the black zipper cases but he also sells nicer cases made by Wayne Robbins. Some of the customs dealers sell Bill's custom cases. I've thought about buying one of the fancy cases but forgot about it. I'm definitely more interested in the knives. If you or Nettie or another family member made handmade cases, I would buy them... though I'm sure no one is looking for more to do.

I quite like the case I received with my Chambriard Le Thiers:

Very soft leather, and it protects the pockets in my shorts. For jeans the knife goes in pocket sans case.

I also have one of the Scagel cases, and another that came with my Boker Camp knife. Both are nice, neither gets any pocket time.

Zippered cases end up in the pile of empty boxes. There is one knife I'd like a zippered storage case for, my BHK Nessmuk fixed blade, as I won't store O1 in the sheath, I don't like rust...

Thanks for the link, Jake. A comment on Bill's since you haven't handled one. I keep a 3k folder in that case and I always feel like it is the perfect case for storage when I don't carry the knife. They are nice.

Thank for the info, Kevin. I'll probably pick up some... if I can stop spending all of my money on knives. ;)

I think this is one of Ken's early cases.

I would prefer a slipcase, but it doesn't seem like it would be too much extra work to offer them both. Of course your knives are so nice, I don't think it would be too much to ask your customers to get their own slip case!

It is a nice gesture to offer either cases.

I would get more use out of a slipcase, preferably and open-ended one if I'm carrying the knife, but the cases by Bill's are nice for storage. I guess a choice between the two would be a safe way to go for most customers.

This might not be the answer you're looking for. But I'm going to go with both.

A simple zipper case for shipping/packed knives and a slipcase for the customers carry. Most slipjoints will fit a standard size slipcase. And I would LOVE it if all my knives came with one. Yet the one knife that came with one, I still went out and bought a zipper case for because I simply feel that such a nice knife deserves both.

I did the same when I bought a handmade slipjoint a while back. It came with a zipper case. Yet the first thing I did was stitch a simple slipcase for it. Then I went out and bought one of Al's sheaths for it.

A zipper case or slipcase doesn't have to be expensive and doesn't HAVE to add much to the cost. I'd expect one or the other if I bought a pricey handmade knife (not expensive. Just high priced). But if a maker supplied BOTH he'd definately be scoring points in my book and I'd probably be shouting that fact off the rooftops.

I'll agree with Elliot, it depends on the knife. I personally won't buy a knife that I'm not willing to carry. If it's a larger style knife, I like a belt sheath. If it's a smaller knife, 4" and smaller, I'm fine sticking it in my pocket with my keys and what not that ends up in my pocket. The Keith Johnson knife I had made had a nice suede pouch that I assume he made, I've got no clue where it is. The Menefee knifes I've owned came wrapped in paper. The knife and the maker are the selling points for me. Although the little extras are nice, I have never bought a knife because of them or not bought one because of the lack the of.

Ken,
I agree with other forumites: although in the end I wouldn't care that much, a custom slipjoint should come with a good quality case or slipcase.
Although I'm sure that any knife would go "naked" into my pocket, I'm voting for the pocket slipcase, open top.
That's what I will expect when you will send me my knife
