Quick Question about Different Sub Fora

Hello,

Sorry to take up space with what probably seems like an unnecessary question. I would have liked to just message a moderator, but I have not yet decided if I will upgrade my account and was therefore unable. To this point I have read, posted in, and enjoyed the General Discussion board, the Knife Law Board, the Axe Board, and the Sword Board. I found these places to be great resources for quality information exchanged through polite conversation.

I also came across the Whine and Cheese section, and thought it sounded interesting. So far as I could tell from the sticky threads at the top of that section, that it was specifically designed for posting pictures of babes, blowing off steam, trading verbal barbs, etc, with greatly relaxed regulations regarding language and etiquette. I decided to give it a try, so I went in and introduced myself. I was met with impolite responses, and I responded in kind. I found it to be enjoyable and a change of pace from the the other more civilized sections of the website.

My question is this, so long as I abide by the site's rules, am I free to engage in spirited exchanges with other posters in that section? I was having a nice time trading lighthearted insults with some of the guys, and the prospect of my banning was raised. During the banter, a number of posters began suggesting that I would likely be banned despite having broken no rules. The insinuation was that even absent any rule breaking, a poster could get hammered simply if people didn't care for what he was saying. That wouldn't make sense to me, would seemingly contradict the spirit of the Whine and Cheese sub forum, and be seemingly impossible, as when the rules on speech are so relaxed, people are bound to become offended. I am hoping this banning talk was just joking as well, because I thought my posts to be very much in keeping with the general mood of Whine and Cheese.

In any case, losing my account is something I certainly want to avoid, because as I said, I am greatly enjoying and obtaining valuable information from this website. I would very much like to become a contributing member of this online community.

A couple quick follow ups:

Is there a way in which I can determine which posters are moderators? There are many different name colors on this site and I am not sure what they are meant to indicate.

Also, assuming nothing truly egregious, ie racism, pornography, gore, etc, has been posted, will a poster be given a warning if they are crossing a line?

I just want to make sure I am clearly understanding the rules in order I can play by them.

Best,

- Helmer

Whine & Cheese. A swamp. Navigate slowly at first and observe the natives in their murky habitat.
Yes, we do generally give warnings, especially based on overall record of participation on Bladeforums generally. No, non-moderators talking about banning are not to be taken seriously.

Thank you for the response.

What should I make of this?

Rules, we don't need no stinkin' rules. Shoot, I might even ban his stupid ass, just because we have seen this ignorant, delusional act before a few times and it is old and quite boring and he is way too much of a dumbass for the sacred dumbass thread.

There is his rule.

Is this just banter or am I in danger? Like I said, I have done absolutely nothing against the rules, and have no intention of doing so.

He seems to be saying that Whine and Cheese is open season, unless a moderator decides to go rogue?

If there is no sense of uniformity for the enforcement of rules, I will steer clear - I will also say that this, if the case, is absurd and can can only lead to the grinding of personal axes through bannings and abuses by those in positions of authority.

Hi there.
Perhaps you might try thinking of W&C like you would the "Corner Bar."
Most of the people "trading barbs" in W&C are already friends.
Whether you know it or not, you've already marked yourself as somewhat of an odd duck.
You might consider taking a step back from walking into a room full of what are, to you, perfect strangers and immediately commencing to hand out free insults.
It just shows a general lack of tact, and for that, naturally people are going to respond negatively.
The Corner Bar probably has some rules too, but the customers there don't feel the need to dwell on them, they already know how to get along, intuitively.

It seems he came here to be a thorn in the collective side of BFC, while not breaking rules he is purposefully "getting in the way". This thread is just an example of that as I can see no sensible direction for it to go.

Indeed.

This bit in particular shows "the lack."

Anyone who has been around a while knows how highly respected Gus is, and how deep this fellow is trolling in his feeble effort to get his goat.
As I am sure you will immediately recognize, even this statement is enough to fly right over KH's head...

I am however looking for a more definitive answer.

If I am free to post in the W&C section, so long as I remain within the parameters of the forum rules, without fear of being kicked off the site, I very much want to join the fray. It seems to me that playful jabs would be the inevitable result of a sub forum like W&C, but it seems like some people are taking it too seriously.

But like I said, being able to remain on BladeForums and have serious discussions in the other sections is more important to me that having a good time in the off topic sub forum. I am genuinely hoping for a clear answer here, but if no one can or will define what seems to a gray area, I will play it safe and stay out of the Whine and Cheese section.

With regard to intuition, mine told me, given the described purpose of W&C in its sticky threads, that I could post as I had been without event.

I think this is unfair.

I came to the support forum to ask a genuine question with no intention of stirring the pot, and people are coming in here and trying to make trouble.

I am absolutely not attempting to be a thorn in the forum's side - particularly not its "collective side." A brief search of my posts from anywhere but the Whine and Cheese section will reveal as much. I came here to learn about knives and have no interest whatsoever in disrupting serious discussion.

I was just horsing around in the W&C section, and the only direction I hope this thread takes is one which will let me know if I can continue doing so.

I thought I understood how this site worked and it seems I may have been incorrect in that regard. The only reason I am posting here is because I am new here and trying to figure out what is and is not acceptable.

Entertaining stuff.
I'm standing by, I'll be interested to read any response you may get from mgmt as well. :)

Here is a definitive answer for you.

Yes, the whine & cheese forum is for using profanities, generally taking the piss out of each other and behavior not permitted in the rest of the forum. What it is not, however, is a free trolling forum. We encourage our members to be themselves in that forum, but not so far as they abuse the privilege of posting there. Bringing family into a banter is not acceptable and is frowned upon, because, quite frankly it is the last resort of a troll who has no game. A posters family member usually isn't even aware of the altercation and isn't involved. There should be no reason to even mention them.

The mods here are pretty uniform in enforcement and pretty laid back. That being said, if we see someone all to happily stirring up trouble or trolling for the sake of trolling...even in W&C....well, it may be decided that they are of little benefit here and the site would be better as a whole without them.

Hello and thank you for your response.

I am honestly not trying to be difficult here, but I am reading ambiguity even in your answer.

You say, so too do the descriptions in the W&C sticky threads, that the place is for profanities, "taking the piss out of each other," playing the dozens, etc. But you then go on to say someone can be axed for perceived "trolling."

Again, my intention here is not to waste anyone's time, but what does that mean? I think most people understand trolling precisely as profanely trash talking. That sounds to me like someone can go from "taking the piss out of someone," to "free trolling," and getting in trouble for it, as soon as they push someone's buttons - but isn't that the intended result of "taking the piss out of someone?"

Like I said, it seems like a cool sub forum and I want to post there, but I'm not going to take the risk if I could lose my account on such cryptic grounds.

It's fairly clear you're being intentionally obtuse here but I'll humour you......

Many, many people come here to this forum because they like knives and spend time on the forum getting along with people just fine. There are then the few that come here and make silly scenes, try to piss people off by acting up in various ways and/or generally just not getting along with people. Do you feel you come across to us as the former or the latter ? One tends to get banned quite quickly and the other doesn't.

I have to say that is really disappointing, and seeing as this section is for feedback as well I will offer some.

I think it is ludicrous that this site has a section designated specifically for jocular slights, yet when I go there to do so I am threatened by a moderator. I then go to the support forum hoping for clarification, and the only answer I get amounts to, "The moderators are laid back and enforce the rules uniformly, but if one of them decides they don't like you, even if you play by the rules, they can eliminate you by arbitrarily labeling you a troll."

If you look at my posts in that section, you will see that every time I addressed someone, it was in response to them engaging me, but I'm the one who will be rolling the dice if I continue in such a fashion. Very Lame.

I will steer clear of W&C, but that is a shame because I was about to, and had already with just a few posts begun to breathe some new life into the place.

On a side note, do we still have until October before you come back?

No way I'm going back there.

I plan to purchase and begin carrying a knife. I take that very seriously. I am not going to risk losing this resource by hurting someone's feelings in the trash talking section.

BOTH.

I thought that was the point of having an area for joking and jiving.

I am not trying to be "obtuse." I plan on posting on this forum, that being the case, the last thing I am going to do is deliberately provoke moderators in the support forum.

cool, you should post up some pics when you get it.

So you know; it takes all kinds.

Much lesser capable trolls than you, yourself, have flashed some decent blades around here in the past before they got teh B&.

It's textbook trolling, best to just ignore him.
I wonder if he will pony up so he can add the sig line and avatar elements.

I'm starting to think you're trying to get me in trouble.

I don't appreciate being insulted, but I will not be baited into arguing in a place where it is not allowed.

I don't know what you are getting at with the link to my thread asking about avatars, but I will tell you that that urban dictionary link is nonsense. I am not emulating that entry, someone made that to poke fun at me.

I will definitely do that. I decided that, with regard to which knife I will choose, I will make up my mind tomorrow and order it. I'm pretty excited.
