Quick question regarding fish

When I was a child I heard this saying, I don't remember who said it or where its from.

"if the fish has scales it's safe to eat, if it doesn't have scales don't eat it"

As a whole is the quote correct?

No.

Catfish are delicious, as are a number of other fish that you skin rather than scale.

Sharks and sting rays, for instance, are quite tasty as well.

As an active duty chairborne commando and someone who disgrees whole heartedly with your opinion of Edward Grylls, I hope you do not discount everything I say.

My favorite freshwater fish to eat are catfish, eels, and bullfrogs, I know bullfrogs are not fish, all of which have no scales, so I would say that your saying is without a doubt not true. Take into account I have never been to Australia and have no idea of the fish species found there. Chris

An interesting Q&A:

Fish With Scales

Question - Hi, my mother will not eat any fish that does not have scales, can you tell
me what fish has scales, or the fish that do not have scales, which ever list is shorter?
We have a long standing argument about this and would love to have it finally put to rest.

You sent us on quite a search. It would be difficult to give complete lists of either.

Solution:
It turns out that religious Jews follow biblical dietary codes that require that all fish
eaten must have fins and scales.
The following reliable site has a fast primer on this, about 10% scroll down the page.
(We have found many sites that are not very reliable, so be careful!)
http://www.ou.org/kosher/primer.html

Common commercial fish (but certainly not ALL of the kinds of fish in the world) are
listed at the following reliable source:
http://www.kashrut.com/articles/fish/

On packaged fish, if one of the following copyrighted symbols appears on the packaging,
many consider it to be trustworthy in following biblical dietary codes.

We hope this helps!

Answer: In the Jewish religion, kosher dietary laws permit the eating of fish with fins
and scales, but not fish without both fins and scales. Seafoods such as shellfish, shrimp
or lobster are also forbidden. The following is adapted from a list by an organization
responsible for certifying foods as being kosher. The list is not complete, but is a
useful guideline to those fish most commonly available.

Kosher Fish (with fins and easily removable scales): Albacore, Bass, Buffalo Fish, Carp,
Cape Capensis, Char Cod, Flounder, Goldfish, Grouper, Haddock, Halibut, Herring, Mackerel,
Mahi Mahi, Orange Roughy, Perch, Pike, Pollock, Salmon, Sardines, Snapper, Sole, Suckers,
Tilapia, Trout, Tuna, Walleye, Whitefish, Whiting.

Non-Kosher Fish (this list is not comprehensive): Catfish, Eels, Grayfish, Marlin, Shark,
Snake Mackerels, Squab, Sturgeons, Swordfish.

runningboar: I'm not like that mate, you think of bear one way I think of him another way no biggie. Cheers for answering my question, it was something I always wondered :) I suppose the saying could have come from the couple of species of blowfish we have round these parts (they have no scales). I guess the saying discounts a lot of tasty fish :)
thanks again.

xinel, is your family Jewish? See my post above.

Xinel,
All species of blowfish that I am aware of are very poisonous, a piece of blowfish liver the size of a pinhead has enough toxin to kill 5 grown men. Chris

yeah, it says somewhere in the Bible that the only ocean dwellers fit to eat have fins and scales

Interesting set of info Guyon, I was thinking purely in a survival not gonna kill me if i eat it situation. Always interesting in seeing how other religions/people eat :)
Once read a list of alcohols from around the world like snake wine and seagull wine etc. Some of it made me feel a bit queezy but interesting never-the-less.

If I remember a japanese sushi chef has to go to school for 2 years to be able to legally prepare and serve blowfish. Chris

In a survival situation, I'd eat everything but a blowfish! :D

All I seem to catch down the ocean near where I live is blowfish :( theres thousands of them, just dip the hook in the water and out pops one. Farmers round here catch them and use them to kill fox's. The fox's wont take normal baited meat but love blowfish :)

The Japanese will be invading Australia soon. :p

hahahaha they already have mate :)
I just wish they would bring their tv shows with them.
Can't get enough of Japanese tv off youtube.

Eels BTW do have scales but are microscopic !! There must have been a practical basis for the Jewish dietary rules .I'm sure that they found certain foods unreliable as far as safety .With poor sanitation in populated areas seafood can get some nasty diseases and spread them .Clams and oysters would be high on the list.Today with chemicals high fat fish like eels can collect chemicals like PCBs...Today they should put all foods from China on the no eat list !!!
