search isnt working for me here, sorry if this is a repost question...

as far as i can tell, the cultivation disk or harrow disk im using to make this knife is 1080 steel, what do you all think?

if it is, isnt it an oil quench, but can also be water (brine) quenched? im going to do an edge quench (hoping for the line to show).

once quenched, i usually temper to a straw color in my kitchen oven :D and then soften the back a bit with a torch, will this affect the quench line?

at what grit should the quench line start to show?

i know iv read or asked all these things before but i learn through repetition:jerkit: sorry

ill have pics of this one to show off, its lookin good with a nice flat grind from my new belt grinder:D:D:D

I only have experience with 1075 and 1084 so will assume 1080 is going to be close. Going to take a fast quench like parks #50, brine or water. I've used water and brine mostly but did just get some parks and did 2 blades with it so far. All three turned out fine blades that were fully hardened except the last one was clay coated for a hamon. The hamon clearly showed after sanding to 400 grit, boiling in vinegar for 15 min and resanding with 400 grit. I didn't torch draw the spine on that one in fear of it messing up the hamon so one of the other guys will have to give a better answer on that.

If you edge quench the spine should be soft and not need softening.
As far as I know cultivation disks are something like 1080.
Look forward to the pics.

i use john deere cultivator discs and had matt doyle test a piece. it is 1075 steel. it is oil quench. i do an edge quench in canola oil and heat the edge with a cutting torch with the oxygen cut down somewhat.

If you edge quench you'll be able to show a good line quenching in veggie oil. The easiest way to pop the line after that is to etch in FC or vinegar. With either acid you should be able to see a line around 400 grit no problem on an edge quench. As already mentioned, you won't need to draw it back with an edge quench. I just wait until the oil stops bubbling before I drop it the rest of the way into the bucket.
