My job is selling off some obsolete steel.I just wondered if any of it was good for blades or any uses it would be suited for.I'm just getting started so steel types are a mystery to me :o
Steels are
C1018
C8620
15B28
12L14
C1045
C1035

Thanks guys

Well C1018 would be useful for decorative damascus, and C1045/C1035 would be useful for hatchets and axes. Even if none of the steel would work for what you want to do some of the makers here would buy that steel from you if its a good price. ;)

Not sure what a good price would be but for example the C1045 is 1.25 Hex shape 144 inches long for 15 dollars. The C1018 is available in 3/16ths round 144" for a dollar and 3/16thsX1/2X144" for 2 bucks.I can post the whole sheet if there's interest.

Well if you intend to sell the steel here you will need to upgrade your account and post in the for sale area. I would like to see the sheet please.
edit-I just did a rough calculation and the C1045 is about .50 per pound, that is an excellent price.

Not really my intent to be a seller,I just figured that if it could help a fellow member that i'd do so.Wasn't going to charge anyone beside the cost of steel and whatever shipping it might be.How should I proceed? I want to help people out but I don't want to run afoul of the rules.

ETA,when I said my job is selling off obsolete steel I meant that my employer is selling steel to employees that is obsolete ie. a size we longer use, etc. And not that it's my job.

Iv'e emailed a mod to get clarification on selling this stuff.Meanwhile, any other info on uses for these steel types?

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Sounded like you were employed as a seller.

I'm definitely interested in some of that 1045. 1045 is used by some smiths to make hammers. I've read that C8620 is a case hardened steel but I haven't read about its uses. If one more knowledgeable guys sees this thread they could tell you the uses of the steels.

I have some shorter pieces of 1084 and 01 laying around if you want some good knife steel. I think I have 14" of 1/4x3/4 O1 and a 14" piece of 1x1/4 1084 that I can't currently use.

any idea if the composition of 15n28 is anything close to 15n20, because that is a very popular steel for damascus makers

We use the 15B28 steel for spindles on John Deere X series tractors beyond that I have no idea as to it's properties or composition.I'd be up for swapping for other steels preferably something suitable to a newb with a forge as well other bladesmithing stuff like handle material or whatever.
