Quick tapping question

I'm no expert but I get much straighter tapped holes by using the drill methoud. I use a Dewalt 14volt cordless(left over from sign work days) and set the clucth at the lowest setting and loosly hold the linner and slowly run the tap all the way in then out and it's done. A drop of tap fluid every 4-5th hole and I'm good. Only tape I've broken is by droping the drill with the tap in it. Keep in mind that taping with a drill is tapping realitivly thin material all the way through, not like tapping 1/2" steel plate.

I chuck it up in the cordless, set the clutch to the lowest setting(even that will break a tap in a 14volt gun) and drill with my right hand, holding the linner with my left. I hold the linner with my finger tips so that when the tap bottoms out it will pull the linner out of my hand and make it spin. Put the gun in reverse and back the tap out. Like Dan said, zip zip and your done. I don't know if it's the ergonomics of the drill or just that I've drill a ton of holes with one but I get a lot straighter tapped holes with the screw gun than with doing it by hand with a T wrench. Also my cordless has a varible speed trigger and I run the tap in and out at the slowest speed I can. If I were to buy on just for tapping Ti I'd probably try to get a smaller gun, around 4.5 or so volt cordless, long as it had a clutch and a varible speed trigger.

THanks for all the tips, guys. I tried chucking my tap on another scrapped folder project in the drill press and turning it by hand, etc and that really stunk, for me. I think I might try the cordless screwdriver variation of what you're talking about...
