Quickest Khuk?

Dear Group,
I have been reading some past messages and am needing some advice on the most useful khukuri for self defense. I was considering a 20" (maybe 25") sirupati, but have read good reports on the Kobra. Just which is the quickest blade to 'bring to bear'?

Jeff and Miss Kallisti.

Jeff - My first consideration was a defensive Khukuri, which of course implies concealed carry. Yvsa steered me toward the 12" blades, and I have a Sirupati and an AK. The Sirupati is much favored by the Martial Arts guys, as it is a fast blade. The AK, just by holding it, is a much more powerful blade. I don't think there is an ounce of difference in their weight.

When Bill Bagwell wrote for SOF, he bemoaned the fact that there were few who realized that a large Bowie could take off an opponent's hand. No one who has handled even a 12" AK would even think this a strange statement, applied to a Khuk. "Concealed carry" needs more consderation, as well as a flatter sheath, with a lining of very cut-resistant material. Both my brain cells are working on this as I type (which means one of them is asleep) but it is coming. Legality may rear its' ugly head in most areas. Here, our CCDW law allows concealed carry of "other than normal knives" - yep, wide open at this point, and so far uncontested. While the larger blades are more awsome, the little ones are still bigger than most seen on the street, and they don't lack in deterrent value. As a defensive knife, I'm sticking with the 12s, with a lean towards the AK. "Martial Arts" to the contrary, the Gorkhas interviewed about "style" said "Chop to head, chop to chest, cut across legs, all good". There is a 400-year-old lesson in K.I.S.S.

Definitely the Kobra as a pure fighter/slasher/slicer in the 18 inch size. A 15 inch Sirupati would be my next choice.

Dear Walosi,
I will mainly be using it in a house defensive situation, so concealability is not such a priority. However...now you've set me thinking too. The sheath is the major bulk so slim down the sheath and hey presto! hidden Khuk. I will think on this option as well, which means buying another Khukuri to go with my planned Kobra, gulp.
The AK in 12" would certainly scare most people. And if it should come down to blows I'd rate it above any other type of blade as you say. I imagine it snapping some muggers switchblade in half....
Thanks for the advice, I'm off to bed with my AK..

Jeff.

I haven't really shown anyone my 20" Kobra... I am saving it for the first lucky, maybe unlucky, individual who decides to break into my apt.
My 12" AK I have shown to my friends and they say, "Dave, what are you going to do with a knife that size?" Little do they know... he he he.

If I was going to get into a late night allyway skirmish I would prefer to have my Kobra, however I would not feel less capable of defending myself with my AK.
Now that I think of it, if I saw it coming, I think I would show up with my .45 and my Mini-14.

Dear SamuraiDave,
Given the choice I'd go with a flamethrower! But the UK prevents anyone defending themselves with more than your fists, even if your enemy has an UZI. That's why I break the law every day.
The kobra sounds tremendous, but might be difficult to shove in my waistband! I will just have to buy more Khukuris Heh Heh.

Jeff& Miss K.

A 17" 14oz chainpuri villager is in there. But the 12" Sirupati is easier to carry. And the 12 AK is infinitely more powerful. After all is said and done, it wouldn't surprise me if the BAS rated high also.

Bottom line, I'd go with the 12" sirupati simply because it is magic.

Dear Rusty,
Isn't it lovely making this sort of choice? like choosing between a ferrari and a porche, either way you win.
I am tending towards 12" Sirupati or AK for personal carry, and definitely something 20" or more for home use, probably Kobra. I have been swinging my 15"AK around this morning and if it didn't connect with the target it's pretty slow to bring back for another bash, but if it did hit....I wouldn't favour his chances of getting up again!
I have made a collection box in my house devoted to Khukuri cash, the quicker I get another one the happier I'll be....

Best wishes,
Jeff.

Jeff,
I have a few K's! The one I like best is a 16.5"!Easy to carry(keep one in my truck)! Lord ,it is FAST & comfortable, like an 18"WW2 also, but I like the 16.5"WW2 better!

:
Walosi there's a material you might wanna consider for a concealable scabbard.

There was a fellow on the general forum I believe it was and quite some time back that used a couple of pieces of a Rubbermaid® waste basket to make a really neat little scabbard for a Schrade® Sharpfinger.
It can be cut with heavy shears or a pair of tin snips and is moldable with a good hair blower.
Just don't let yer wife catch ya.

I bought the waste basket but it's serving use for my water bucket to keep steel cool when grinding or buffing.
And I feel that some one with an inventive mind such as yours could come up with something really neat.
It could be combined with other materials to make a very thin light weight concealable rig.

I don' have a Kobra but having handled a couple I believe it's the fastest khuk around.
(Of course my personal YCS claims a good spot as well.

Oh, hell! Go and put on the 12" Sirupati. OK?

That's the always one. It doesn't count because it's part of you.

Now now that's settled, make your decision. Eventually you'll sick with one. Til the next UBDOTD, that is.

Rusty, I can only imagine the 12" sirupati, but if you like 'em, there must be something good there. The only sirupati I have is a 20".

Jeff, after getting the chance to check out Yvsa's personal YCS I am thinking it is one of the best choices for a compact (compared to what I usually haul around), fast, well balanced defensive blade. I also think that with the right rig it will conceal well.

I'm looking for a material (maybe Dupont Corian) that is more rigid, can be shaped like wood, but is more "edge resistant", and can be covered with leather like th traditional sheath. Hard nylon slabs would fit the bill, but they are rare (so far). If your webby is still hooked up, I'll e-mail you some more stuff.
My Barb has warned me away from her Rubbermaid and Tupperware trove, and she glances at the 25" Kobra when she repeats the warning. Logistics on this one are definately gonna be "ex-domicile". Medicare don't cover that many stitches.

Dear Jim, Finn, and all,
a lot of good info, thanks a lot. I am deciding on materials for a sheath at the moment to fit an original ww2 16" Khukuri which has seen a lot of action and rust in its time. The sheath ideas will come in handy.
Now a question on the finish of the Kobra. I've looked at a picture of the 20" Kobra and it doesn't appear to have the mirror finish of the Sirupati. Is it just a trick of the light or is it a duller finish? I love that mirror finish so much I would get a Sirupati if the Kobra was dull.
Many thanks again for the info,

I'm off to caress Kallisti now!

Jeff.
