Lets just put out a random hypothetical situation.

You are an L.A. S.W.A.T. officer called onto a hostage situation in a hospital. You are sent in through an alternate unseen route, lets say a duct or service access. The only way to procceed with the rescue is to take out the gunman at the beginning of the hallway....silently. You reach for your blade but which one.

And yes this excludes fixed blades....HYPOTHETICALLY.

if handled correctly i can open my 550 Grip quieter than any other knife ive ever seen

More of a slip joint guy, but I have a Frost series tactical that opens fairly quiet, but the lock isn't that nice on it and it doesn't snap. but I have a gerber that's quieter than a moped at a monster truck rally.

I love my tenacious, it never leaves my side, but man does it snap. That just gets everyones attention and it either goes "wow what a cool knife" or the "OMG!!!! that guy has a knife." I ask the question 'cause I just want to control whether I get anyones attention or not.

Yeah, the Tenacious is pretty loud. If you want quiet in terms of just avoiding attention, look at the Axis lock. And look at the Mini range of knives!

my tactical stockman, of course.

So im guessing I spelled HYPOTHETICALLY wrong right. Yes I know S.W.A.T. would use fixed blades...but I ain't S.W.A.T. The story was to show how quiet I meant.

why couldnt you just explain the situation right the first time. that was perfectly reasonable. your original post was downright silly.

I'd sneak up on him and give him the sleeper, but Northwoods makes a quiet folder. :D

The Umnumzaan has polyurethane rings around each of the lug - thumb stud so the impact against the scales when opening is minimized. Thats what I'd use.

I'd whip out my Kabar Dozier Thorn. When that one gets flicked it makes the sound of a S&W 44 magnum being cocked. Then I'd whisper, "Do ya feel lucky punk? Well, do ya?"

Couldn't you just take a lockback, depress the backspring, open the blade and then let go of the back spring? Wouldn't that be completely quiet? A liner lock or a frame lock is always going to have some type of snap because the lock slab has to snap into place. But on a lock back you can control the speed at which the lock engages by holding the back spring down as you open the blade I believe.

That's exactly right. But it's not just lockbacks.

Any folder I own can be opened completely silently by manually actuating the lock. This includes, liner/frame, back lock (one-handed), Hawk Lock (one-handed), and Stud Lock designs. Just use two hands. Even my ZT Auto can be opened silently.

Try it out.
