Quincee Tutorial on Woodsmonkey!

good article!

good trick with the backpack in the middle. another one taught to me the other day on these forums is to use a garbage bag filled with air to take up even more space, then open the bag and use it as a liner to keep you off the wet snow inside.

good tip on smoothing the inside walls/roof. the other night i kept getting little bits of snow breaking off and falling on me and my sleeping bag.

good article, well written and very clear! thanks for writing that and sharing with us.

Simon,

Thanks for the kind words. Don't believe what you hear about the garbage bag though. If the snow is heavy, it doesn't need to be compacted but the weight will most likely pop the bag. If the snow is light, it does need compacting and your weight will pop the bag. I've heard of it done and tried it once before with epic failures. A tarp filled with snow on the inside can work as long as it doesn't rip when you pull it out.

Good tute mate, that pack in the middle trick seems a good idea.

I had the opportunity to stay in one of these in 99 in Norway up near a town called Tromso inside the Arctic cirlce . Think the outside temp dropped to about -20ºC, had a candle on the go and was only wearing normal British Army uniform (no fleeces or warm gear) and slept soundly all night.

I recommend building one of these to anyone who has the snow available.

very nice. for those of us that were wearing short pants ,short sleeves and sandals yesterday in the high 70's ;the act of camping in the snow fascinates me.

Actually it does work and that was me who said it and have done it while at the South Pole as well as other places.

As I said before you have to use common sense when doing this. I said to melt some snow to where it is just turning to a liquid and pour the water onto the snow as you build it up around the bag. The water will freeze very quickly and give you strength. Once it freezes add more snow using common sense, and then more water. If you take a small zip lock bag and poke a few small holes in it, it will make it easier to evenly pour the water out over the snow.

Do not under estimate air pressure in a heavy bag at all. A good heavy contrators bag will not pop when snow is added evenly across it, and in reasonable amounts at a time. I build Monolithic domes and with two inches of water column or about 1/13th of a psi. air pressure I get almost two inches of concrete to stick to the top of a dome on the inside.

Sorry for the highjack, but I wanted to make myself clear here.
