I'm building a propane crucible steel making furnace to play with some real damascus... For the temperatures involved to make wootz I hope a R or S type TC is OK. Do you know the difference of these, as both has same limits and same properties. I googled this and only thing I learned is they are made out of different materials, but it is not clear which type I should prefer....

Thanks...

Try the link above, it should answer any questions you have. R and S type thermocouples, while they handle high temperatures, have platinum wire for one lead and a platinum alloy for the other lead...can you say NOT cheap? I suggest you check prices before deciding on which thermocouple to use. Good old K type is good to over 1300degrees C.

Happy hunting!

Thanks Jim,
 I wasn't aware of the prices, it starts from 400 $... I have to melt without a TC then...
