R.I.P. Jimi Hendrix

Hi All- Too bad Jimi didn't realize actions have consequences.

Maybe the sky was the limit. I can't imagine Woodstock without Jimi, can't imagine his music which was so far in dynamics and superior in that era of musicians not being there. Really wish he could have stayed alive.

Ted "BLABLABLA" Nugent likes to hear himself talking... :thumbdn:

We know Jimi wasn't a saint but we're celebrating his music, not the drugs he took.

Hi Senate-

Jimi Hendrix was undoubtedly a skilled guitarist, but a portion of his fame is due to his untimely death at a young age. Ted Nugent (a truly clean-livin' person) had met Jimi on a variety of occasions and played with him numerous times...and commented on the dangers of drug usage.

Before giving Ted Nugent the "thumbs-down" you should be aware that he is a strident supporter of firearms, archery, knife, and hunting rights. I wouldn't even be surprised to learn that he lurks on this site occasionally.

Jimi Hendrix was certainly a talented guitarist but he probably never reached his potential due to his young death. He certainly never reached the level of virtuosity of someone like Danny Gatton, who was also self-destructive and died way too young.

Funny you should mention Danny. He and Roy Buchanan were vying for reigning Wash.D.C. guitar god continually, sadly,Roy went down in flames also. When speaking of Hendrix, there is only one contender. Can you guess who?Danbo might be able to help. :)

The only person who ever gave me goose-bumps when I heard him playing a Hendrix song was Stevie Ray Vaughn. His version of Voodoo Child is amazing! I think it's on DVD, If you ever get a chance to watch it, you should!!

Hi kricket-

Stevie Ray Vaughn had absolutely scary amounts of talent. You're right...the things he did to the song Voodoo Chile would make Jimi's mouth hang open. Talk about a musician who could insert his soul into a performance.

Stevie was the only one I know who has been allowed to play much less touch any of Jimi's guitars.Al would let Stevie play them as often as he visited.Leon,Jimi's half brother may have also had access to them.Lot's of bickering in the Hendrix family, resolved in the last couple years. So cool how Hendrix "anything" usually involves at least a nod to Stevie. :D Both men's music will be listened to as long as people listen to great music.

Both those guys could pick. But I would have to say the greatest guitar player of all in IMO is Santana.

Hendrix was the best. Not technically; there are people with better chops (and here Stevie Ray springs to mind). It was Hendrix's head that made the difference. Nobody, and I mean nobody, was playing like that when he came on the scene. Younger people can't recognize how special Hendrix was, because his style has been so widely copied since then. It has entered into common musical language.

Hendrix's fame stands on his musical genius, not on his early death. He didn't just play, he created.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, according to Eric Clapton, totally blew him away the first time he heard him play. So that's more than likely the only person I can think of that could rival Hendrix. If you listen to Hendrix "Hey Joe" for example it's so unlike the other music that came out of heavy metal bands. Hendrix version of the National Anthem-he was pure genious, too far advanced. John Lennon was genious, but on a different level. Heck, turn the radio up. :D

12 days till Stevie Ray's birthday, sorry, just can't shut up about him.Stevie's fierce, hybrid(pick, fingers, pick and fingers, thumb, slide)string attack allowed him to master the styles of the "black masters" playing there stuff better than they could and he was acknowledged by them for having accomplished this. After the first time lil' Stevie jammed with BUDDY GUY,Buddy said, far into a screamin' solo,I can't play no more your scarin' my guitar and laughing went and hid his guitar behind the stage curtain.JIMI was/is the ideal. The one to set your sights on and go for.I think they were both Number One.And I don't see anyone knocking either one off in the near future. What a rant, huh! Will elaborate for those interested on his birthday coming soon.JIMI WAS TOTALLY INCREDIBLE! :)

 The thing about Stevie was that it didn't matter what he was playing or how fast or slow he was playing it, he never got lost.... There was a flow to his music that I've never heard anyone else (including Jimi) be able to achieve....Sometimes in the middle of a solo, a lot of good guitarists seem to struggle a little, almost like their not sure what to do next, but I never saw that from Stevie...Not taking anything away from anyone else, it's just my personal opinion. ;) Hope no one takes this as a personal attack on other artists....
