Last Saturday, I had to bring my Beagle/Lab mix down to be killed.

She'd been having trouble walking lately, was deaf as a doorknob and was getting cataracts. She went downhill fast the last couple of weeks.

On Thursday she began throwing up her food. I was hoping she was just sick. Then Friday night she fell down and had a seizure, and spent the night crying and howling. I couldn't let it go on now that she was suffering, so Saturday morning, I took her down and did the deed.

Sorry to hear that Cpl. 18 years is a good long life for any dog, I'm sure you have a ton of memories with Chewy. It sounds like you did the right thing when you had to. I'm dreading the day when I have to make that decision for one of mine. Our Border Collie's going on 12yo and the Doberman will be 11 this spring. I hope they both make it to 18!

Prayers and smoke for your dog

So sorry to hear about it. Putting down my 3 dogs over the last 16 years has been about the hardest thing ever. But you've got to do it at some point. You owe it to your dogs to not let them suffer.

Think about the fun times, not the end.

When you are ready, there are a lot of great dogs out there that need a good Daddy

Smoke and prayers. Sorry about your dog. They're funny that way -- they really are man's best friends in ways people just can't be.

My condolences to you Cpl on the loss of your friend. Although you did what was needed, it hard to feel comfortable afterward. Shann's advice is good. Thinking of them running and happy helps keep my heart from getting too heavy. My best to you bro.

Sorry to hear about your dog Cpl,losing your furry friends aint easy.Smoke sent from the Oregon coast.

These stories always bring tears to my eyes. It's amazing how attached we become to our pets. My Boarder Collie "ella" is 13yo. I am sure she short time these days. Her mind seems clear but her legs are failing fast. My thoughts go out to you for your loss.

Sorry for your loss Sir.

Our family's dog died about 13 years ago. I still think about that dog every single day... I feel your pain.

Had a very sweet little brittany. Sadie. My wife and I got her when we first got married. She helped raise all 4 of our kids - still remember her romping out in the back yard with them during a snowfall. Much loved and she returned it every minute of her existance. She had to go down to the vets when she was around 14 with the usual problems that old dogs have. Absolutely the worst day of my life. Took her out to a piece of property we own out in the country and buried her out there. Really tough coming home to the dinner table that night and telling the kids. So sorry to hear that you have had to deal with this. I guess its the hard part of owning a dog - knowing when that time has come and then doing the deed.

Sorry to hear that. I had to have my dog put down about a year ago now, Steely_Gunz posted the following, and since it hasn't been posted yet (and given how many times I've quoted it)...

"For God so loved the world that he gave man a companion reflecting the absolute best in himself. Loyal, Compassionate, Courageous, and filled with Unconditional Love."

Sorry for your loss.

Cpl Punishment, sorry for your loss. Pets have a way of working their way into a family that means a lot more than some people understand. A few years ago, my Irish Setter had to be put down after 17 years with me. Whiskey was almost pure grey & white, not very much red was left in his coat & feathers. I sat at the vet's office & held his head in my lap, & that was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I think it was one of the few times I saw my dad with tears in his eyes. Keep the good thoughts alive, & remember all the good times you two had together.
Be safe.

R.I.P. Chewy and smoke sent for you Cpl
I have 2 dogs but I haven't "lost" one yet. I'm dreading the day which is why I tend to avoid these threads.
