R. Scheppmann Knives 6" Bowie vs. Grizzly Bear *GRAPHIC*

A customer commissioned me to build this knife for his wife. He told me that he was taking it on a grizzly hunt in Alaska, and I had one request... "If you get your bear, use the knife, and send me the pics." He got a 10 ft grizzly and proceeded to skin it out with the Bowie. The guide's knife was dull to begin with and couldn't make the cuts to sever the head, so the Bowie was used to skin the entire thing, and sever the head. The knife is 3/16" thick A-2 tool steel at 60.5 HRC, with a full flat grind. Enjoy.

Looks like a "grizzly" event:D

Always interesting to see how a knife performs in the field. That looks like a serious amount of work to field dress a bear!

Fantastic images! I just ordered a small tanto in A2 and having no previous experience with this steel, this thread has reassured me. Bears are tough, and i know from the number A2 is, but this proves that in real life the steel is an excellent choice!

What a monster Bear. Looks like the A2 bowie did the job quite nice. Dont worry there are plenty more bears where that one came from. The black bears are taking over the mountains around here.
 
There are a large number of black bear in the local mountains here, too. Near Mt. Baldy, we see 500 pound black bears commonly. The customer in these pics took a 525 pound black bear last season... Huge for the species! (Not bad eats either, surprisingly).
 
man would i love a bear rug like that..... just out of curiosity what would it cost over there in the states to purchase a taxidermy bear rug that size with the stuffed head???? Something i hope to have when i am earning a decent wage

That knife sure made light work of that bear, the knives ive had in the past have struggled to even skin a roo

what does bear taste like??? i'd imagine it to have a very gamey taste somewhat a mix of venison and rabbit
 
i think i'm moving to Alaska...
i just read on their fishing and wildlife website that it costs an Alaskan resident $25 for a grizzly tag...:eek:
 
That beast is a monster, it will make a nice rug or mount and whole pile of sausage.

Not sure what it would cost... I've never been in the market.

The meat reminds me of venison, but with a little tougher texture. It is a gamey, so you have to prepare and season it right; that is why burgers or sausage work well.
 
Looks like a fantastic knife doing a great job. As a lifelong hunter I sure appreciate you posting this and showing that your knives do what they are made to do in the real world.

I avoid killing animals myself, but to make such a statement on a knife forum is looking for an argument
(or at least looking for a reason not to get along).

You have to think about where you are and remember that some things are better just left "to each their own."

I will say that that is a very large bear and a great opportunity to use that knife to it's potential.

Mr. Scheppman, thanks for sharing the pictures. I really like the knife you made for him. It looks great and it performed admirably. That is a very nice Griz, and an accomplishment few will get to experience.

Now to address the comment by giant1...
Mr. Scheppman, before I post my comment, I am going to apologize to you in advance for posting this, but felt strongly enough that it needed to be said.

Giant1, you continually make negative comments in threads that pertain to hunting. Enough so that other members have noticed it also.
I have been hunting since I was a kid, and I'm 50 years old now. We hunt for the experience, and the time outdoors. Taking an animal is a bonus, but some of my best hunting memories were during seasons that I wasn't succesful...

Most people that hunt, understand that it's not for everyone, and do not thinkless of them because of it. UNLESS, they happen to be people like you, who always feel the need to offer your unsolicited opinion.
The OP made it clear that the thread had graphic content, but you just couldn't pass up the chance to put your 2 cents worth in, and I'm being generous when I say 2 cents worth...

This is a knife forum. There are people here that hunt and use our knives for hunting. If that is not for you, that is fine. But your continued negative comments pertaining to hunting are rude, and could be considered to be nothing but trolling. That behavior is totally unacceptable here on BF's. In fact, by posting your unsolicited comment in this thread, you have shown that you have no respect for Mr. Scheppman, and should apoogize and delete your comment.

Mr. Scheppman, who made this knife, was probably very proud to see it being used by a client, during a trip that was probably a hunt of a lifetime, and to hear that the knife performed very well.
 
Nice, as for bear, BBQ ribs can be very good.

Very nice looking knife and I'm happy every time I see user pictures.:thumbup:
