R. Scheppmann Knives 6" Bowie vs. Grizzly Bear *GRAPHIC*

To the OP, thanks for sharing these great photo's. And it is a great looking knife.

Waste of a good animal.....:thumbdn:

I would not agree at all.

I am a hunter, and eat what I hunt (for the most part......I don't eat rock chucks and other pest/varmints).

Shooting bears just to kill them and leave them would bother me, but I have no problem with a licensed hunt.

The tags are issued based on population control needs, after population studies. The numbers to be culled are not just drawn out of a hat.

I have eaten all kinds of "weird" game animals. Most are pretty tasty if prepaired right.

Alligator, snake, etc.

I believe hunting is a basic part of being human. We may have grown away from it, but I find something satisfying about killing my own meat, and preparing it (ie butchering the animal). It is hard, messy work, and makes you appreciate that steak from the store even more.

I love bears. I have bear watched in the wild. Had bears try to climb in through the window of the 4x4. I had a bear follow me onto a dock, and had to dive off the end, and came up under another dock to hide. The bear was puzzled about where I went.

That bear was a nuisance bear. It had been chased away repeatedly, and eventually had to be shot by the neighbor (who was really, the cause of the nuisance bear to begin with. He kept 55 gallon containers of cat food for his mountain lion, and snow lynx "pets". Once the bear fond that food supply, he would not leave).

I have had the privileged to hold a grizzly cub.

I am still ok with hunting them, as long as there is a healthy population.

Nice pics, that's a great testimony for the knives capabilities!

Kind regards,

Jos

Awesome stuff congrats

As for the negative hunting comments ......... Oh well

Congrats on a great knife and a great bear. A 10 foot grizzly is CERTAINLY a hunt of a lifetime. Good post, 338375.

Why shouldn't he be able to offer his opinion? Just because he disagrees with the USAGE of a knife? Hell, that's what 90% of the threads on BF are about haha.

Some people need to get over needing to get so butt hurt about someone else having a different opinion. I'm sure Sheppmann sells his knives to hunters and non-hunters alike.

This is a knife forum first, not a hunting forum. One should expect to see differing opinions when posting what could be considered "objectionable" or censurable material, hence the warning.

Sticking to your beliefs is what made you comment, and is the same thing that made him comment.

First things first.

Mr. Scheppman, thanks for sharing the pictures. I really like the knife you made for him. It looks great and it performed admirably. That is a very nice Griz, and an accomplishment few will get to experience.

Now to address the comment by giant1...
Mr. Scheppman, before I post my comment, I am going to apologize to you in advance for posting this, but felt strongly enough that it needed to be said.

Giant1, you continually make negative comments in threads that pertain to hunting. Enough so that other members have noticed it also.
I have been hunting since I was a kid, and I'm 50 years old now. We hunt for the experience, and the time outdoors. Taking an animal is a bonus, but some of my best hunting memories were during seasons that I wasn't succesful...

Most people that hunt, understand that it's not for everyone, and do not thinkless of them because of it. UNLESS, they happen to be people like you, who always feel the need to offer your unsolicited opinion.
The OP made it clear that the thread had graphic content, but you just couldn't pass up the chance to put your 2 cents worth in, and I'm being generous when I say 2 cents worth...

This is a knife forum. There are people here that hunt and use our knives for hunting. If that is not for you, that is fine. But your continued negative comments pertaining to hunting are rude, and could be considered to be nothing but trolling. That behavior is totally unacceptable here on BF's. In fact, by posting your unsolicited comment in this thread, you have shown that you have no respect for Mr. Scheppman, and should apoogize and delete your comment.

Mr. Scheppman, who made this knife, was probably very proud to see it being used by a client, during a trip that was probably a hunt of a lifetime, and to hear that the knife performed very well.

Because his opinion was not about the knife

Knives are tools to many and when someone shows a knife being used weather it be cutting rope or skinning a bear the knife is being used for its intended purpose.

The op offered a disclaimer so if someone is offended by a legally harvested animal stay off the thread

Man has used knives to skin animals a lot longer than man has put knives in cases and said look how pretty

There are entire genres of knives called hunting knives, skinning knives, boning knives and filet knives so i believe they should be able to be shown on a knife forum with out banter

Opinions are certainly valid.
Did you (LS) read the thread ?
In the OP, Mr. Scheppmann states that the knife was a commission and he wanted his customer to send him pics of the successful hunt.
Hard to understand ?
Your post sure sounds like trolling to me.
Lots of sub-forums here and lots of threads, go find one more suited to your delicate sensibilities.

Needless to say a fine knife with a proper edge geometry and heat-treat used as intended.....

As for the hunt and pictures, Lord have mercy on their poor soles if they ever make it into a big slaughter house such as Iowa Beef or something like that.....just think if the supermarkets didn't have those nice little packages of processed meat and we had to do all of the butchering ourselves?!? :)

Bear meat is some of my favorite stuff!!

Sweet looking knife - kudos to your skill in making something that withstood the test of such a massive undertaking.

That bear is HUGE! I love bear hunting myself. Black bears though. No grizzly's here.
Awesome trophy. You should be very proud

Wow! Very cool knife and great pics. Ive never even seen a bear in person. I think it would be really eerie to butcher up such a monster of an animal. Its awesome to see just how powerful of a tool a knife is. That little piece of metal completely sliced apart the body of the largest carnivorous beast on the planet. Just imagine what our ancestors experienced killing mammoths and other prehistoric beasts and then processing them with flint tools.

Nice knife & great bear! I have killed a few bears & ate a lot. The older ones, like any animal, are not as tender as a young animal. Sausage is your friend :). As far as hunting, it is hunters and wildlife biologists that make sure populations of animals are healthy. Take some for the benifit of the rest. If a rancher did not sell calves he would soon have more animals then the land could substain. The plants would be stripped to the ground and a mass die off would follow. Thanks for the pics and the knife!! BB

Giant1 needs to crawl out from under his shroom (see his location).

They are beautiful animals for sure but they're killing machines and the population needs to be thinned. He might change his mind if he ever ran into one.

Also, I don't love killing things but I sure enjoy good fresh meat and when you can't get anything for your family because the grizzlies are eating everything and protected to a certain extent, it gets really frustrating.

Nice pics. I enjoy seeing a good knife put to use!

Very nice knife. I love to see a beautiful tool get used the way it was intended.

Selective hunting is conservation.

Nice point and full flat grind, as a former butcher I know a user when I see it. Great knife, would be a champ at slicey kitchen chores too.

I remember a while back someone posting why anyone would want to use a hunting knife with over a 4 in edge, my family of hunters 5 to 6in was standard with large elk, moose and mulies in saskatchewan. Not everyone is shooting 140lb deer from treestands.

Beautiful working blade, BTW have you written for Backwoodsman or had someone showcase your knives, I am sure I have seen your name there.

Regards

Not sure what that is...

Thanks again everyone for the comments.
