I know there is some different info out there on steel composition of these steels.
The one I am looking for a substitute for has the following composition:
Carbon: 1.25 1.45%,
Vanadium: 1.80 2.20%,
Chromium: 14.00 16.00%,
Molybdenum: 2.30 3.30%,
Manganese: .40%,
Phosphorus: .03%,
Sulfur: .03%,
Silicon: .50%
CPMS30V comes close but has more vanadium and will be harder to sharpen.
Carbon 1.45%
Chromium 14.00%
Vanadium 4.00%
Molybdenum 2.00%
cTS-XHP is also close but has almost no vanadium ie. less wear resistance.
Carbon: 1.6%
Chromium: 16%
Vanadium: 0.4%
Silicon: 0.4%
Ive been looking and looking but I cannot find anything USA made that matches this R2 stuff. Also the point here being that I am trying to find a steel that is gonna perform the same as R2 in regards to wear resistance and ease of sharpening.
Here is a couple metallurgical type questions. Does wear resistance from vanadium content depend on the RC harness? IE if you wanted to use cpmS30V but wanted to use *less* of the available vanadium would you just shoot for a slightly lower RC hardness? Im not sure that is even a valid question.
