Rad new toy

You're gonna love that rifle! I have the same model but I added the Survivor stock to it and a 4X scope. In the stock I carry the allen keys to remove the scope and base if needed to use the iron sights. Mine is a lot more accurate than it's price would have me believe. I can easily bust clays at 100 meters. After that, I use that big ole 405 grn bullet to bust up the clay pieces till there is no more orange left. Kick really isn't too bad. Sorta like a 2 3/4in 12guage to me. Certainly is a nice visceral feeling dropping those heavy rounds in the chamber :) Knowing they are going where I point em makes the the ole NEF just plain fun!

Nice boomstick

I have a Marlin Stainless Guide Gun in 45/70 and I love the Hornady LeveRevolution, it feels like it has more kick to me compared to the other factory ammo and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg :D

Have fun

The 45-70 is a great candidate for reloading. You can load it to be a pinker, all the way to a elephant gun. I have some really good reduced load data if you get set to reload it, drop me a PM. They really shine with cast bullets which are much cheaper and don't seem to be a hostage for the current bullet shortage.

Thanks guys! It'd oughta be a heck of a shooter. I'm very excited. Re: being a thumper- yup! Gonna be a roller coaster.

I do need to get back into reloading. I used to do it when I was a kid with my dad, I just haven't broken down and bought all the accouterments. I've actually got a single stage LEE press (just no place to put it!). All in good time...

There ya go, that's what I was going to say. .45/70 is an excellent nominee for reloading. You'd be able to use it for everything from bunnies to bear, and everything in between.

Cast some bullets. Reload light. Reload heavy. Make comfortable rounds at all bullet weights/velocities.
Shoot a lot. Have money left over.
(I remember reloading for a .458 Winchester Magnum sitting on an old railroad tie, and plinking with that monster like it was a .22. and for pennies.)

Hey SP
Great find H&R/NEF rifles are some of the best bargins out there.very reliable and accurate. I dont know if you are aware or not NEF can fit all the shot gun barrel's they make or the rifle tubes from .22lr to 500 S&W.price were in the $80 to$100 range for barrel's last time I checked so as time went by you got a .22 hornet or mag. and a12 or 20 guage you could have a very good survival set, with all the bases covered 45/70 rock&rolla:thumbup:

H&R makes some very solid, very accurate firearms. I do most of my deer hunting with one of their slug guns- and it is more accurate than most centerfire rifles. You can get a wide variety of barrels fitted to that receiver as well.

.45-70 is a round that you should consider reloading if you intend on shooting it more than a little bit.

I have had a H&R 45-70 since 1993 Bought it out of my tax check that year we moved to a farm in the boondocks and I needed a rifle. I wanted a ruger #1 but couldn't afford it so I got the H&R. It defended livestock and fed the family when times were rough. With a healthy dose of IMR3031 and seirra 300 grain hollow points It knocks deer down like they were hit with a truck! Doesn't get used much since I live in shotgun only state now . I get it out once in a while and put the thump on a groundhog. Deadliest gun I have ever pulled the trigger on. By the way I would not trade for a ruger #1 today It has earned a place in the safe .
